Hey JB,
I am sure that this has often been discussed on the 80scool list, and for
mostly gasoline engines not our rattly old diesels. And yes, your tickover
revs are way low. I am no expert at auto's but on such an engine - auto or
manual - it would mean very low engine oil pressure which will not be good.
As for harmonic balancer shafts. I have 2 in my 4 cylinder Pajero engine
and it is so smooth. Only problem, my model has a rubber drive belt (2000
miles old) and if not replaced on time they do give-out spectacularly I am
told. Modern Paj's have chain drive shafts and they are excellent.
Similar shafts are to be found in John Deere tractor engines, and they are
the best after Caterpillar. A Danish firm called Bukh also put them even in
2 cylinder marine and industrial engines with good effect. A Bukh is a
sought after engine for slow moving canal boats, although expensive. But I
digress.

Balkans go everywhere on those mountains and have no lifts at all?

Nice to hear from you , are you enjoying the new relaxed life with no
eminent danger of being blown up or is the rich lifestyle agreeing with you.
When you said oil pressure and being bad and all that I had to take another
tablet for the poor old heart. what do you mean low oil pressure , mine
reads fine on the dial on the dash. Are you trying to scare me into an early
nursing home hum come to think of it those places are full of nice young
nurses. Ok im back on track sorry old age etc, I reised the revs to 600 and
that seems high to my delicate ears 800 is even higher and seems racing the
engine, shows you what I know shag all. If you guys think it should be
higher then higher it shall be, just have to ask then how to do it with out
using the rev button, I know its cheating but thats what usnon teck ones do
at times.

Enjoying the relaxed lifestyle yes, living on a boat tends to slow one down
somewhat. As for 'rich', well, all I can say is that we are now down to
basic paint-stripper gin from Tesco or Aldi. Certainly not wealthy enough
to spend as much on my motors as you JB ;o)
As for low oil pressure, I mean that coursing round your engine. All idle
speeds are set to meet a compromise between steady firing between cylinders
without surging, adequate oil pressure particularly when cold, sufficient
revs to drive ancillaries, and not stall when the clutch is let out.
Whatever your gauge shows is only a guide. I would rather rely on revs set
to specification than any pressure gauge other than one supplied by
capillary tube, whereas nearly all on cars these days are electric sensed.
(I have just bought a new electric sender for the electric Durite gauge on
my 2 cylinder boat engine, so bad and unreliable has its reading become).
To check your revs, any good engineer - especially plant engineer - would
have an optical meter and can check it in a minute for you. You just stick
a piece of sticky reflective tape on the rim of the crank pulley and point
the meter at it from a safe distance. (Some will work on just a dab of
tippex on the pulley sheave). That will give you peace of mind as to it
being set correctly. But as I wrote before, I am no expert on auto boxes,
so can make no comment on requirements for those.
