You may have seen a previous post by me written as I try to get to the bottom of a chattery noise on my 04 LC 120. The noise is fairly prominent when the engine is cold and chatters away like a badly adjusted tappet but as soon as the engine comes up to temperature it is like somebody throws a switch and the noise is reduced dramatically.

I have tried the usual things new injectors ( which made no difference), fuel vaccum switches, better oil none of which have made much impression on the noise. However I recently stripped down the EGR valve, cleaned it out and refitted it. This has made a big difference and the noise has actually reduced noticeably, but not gone completely which is ultimately what I want.

It does seem that I may be on the right track so I am wondering if there is anything thing else related tothe EGR thst might be worth a look/ There might also be a clue with in how the noise reduces as soon as the engine comes up to temperature?

Any suggestions or guidance will be gratefully received, thanks

Did you clean the inlet manifold and throttle body out as well, and you may consider doing an egr delete, as per TONYCY11 who has made various posts and write ups in the 120 section to do with this.

No I didn't clean much else due to time constraints, I will have a look at the EGR delete posts. Will this not effect emissions for the mot?

You can also block off the EGR system which should stop it from clogging up again. I blocked mine off, and the general theory is to drill a 7mm hole in it to prevent the engine management light coming on.

None that I could tell. No issues with emissions tests either

After doing oil change I bite into egr cleaning. There was an oil leak after egr,so one more thing to check ~ on one side there were 2 gaskets together, on other side none..

I even have egr blanking plate ready, tried to put it in before cooler, but had some difficulties and decided that will blank next time with injector removal.
