well guys where to start great site /club
I recently bought an LC100 4.2 td auto and I love it but I haven’t had a good day yet
It was standing for 2yrs due to bereavement so when I got it I had full service including belts filters oils fluids brakes etc
I have blanked Ger and cleaned out err clogged inlet
Also fitted a breather catch tank
Had injectors tested all good I’m told but since I replaced them I have a little knock which is more noticeable on tickover
I have a miss straight from tickover but seems to clear up through the gears
Can’t tow anything uphill without black smoke and no power down low
Showing blink code 33 at the moment
God knows what that is something to do with vsv air intake I think
Have taken it to2 Toyota deals for diagnosis and neither could read
Any help greatly appreciated
At my wits end

I would say to check every piece of intake pipework for anything blocking it. Take the pipes off and check, take he filter out. It’s not unheard of for creatures to make nests in things like that where trucks have been stood. Next check the turbo runs free and has no blockage. Then check all vacuum hoses for rodent damage or holes of any sort. Check the intake pipework for splits or leaks. Everything from where the air first comes in to the inlet manifold. Make sure you have a GENUINE TOYOTA air filter as some aftermarket ones are short and let muck through.

Check all wiring for damage in the engine bay. Separate connectors and check for corrosion being careful not to damage seals when you reconnect them.

Google Diesel bug and check for that, you could run from a can of fresh diesel to eliminate this.

When the injectors were removed and tested, were they replaced with all new washers and correctly refitted? Were the pipes capped to prevent dirt getting in and kept scrupulously clean when refitting?

Can you hear/feel the turbo working when you drive it?

Wow thanks for the very in depth reply it certainly gives me more to think about , I had to reroute the vacuum piework when I eliminated the Ger by blanking it so I will go over that again , is there an after blanking diagram available for that I wonder
Now the turbo is something I haven’t even looked at so I will
Can’t say I have ever felt it kicking in
I have replaced the air filter and blown out the holder but I will go through the air intake route as you suggest
I will check diesel bug out
The injectors went to a reputable firm so I think they were handled properly
I replaced the seals and washers
Thanks for taking the time to digest

The injector pipes should have been cleaned before removal and blanked so no dirt could get in. The injectors also. These should have returned with blanking caps on.

Was the truck behaving as you describe before you removed the EGR system or did any work on the engine?

Have you checked theres not a split on the air intake after the MAF sensor? Happened to a friend of mine who had a hilux and he had similar symptoms to you.
If there is a split use duck tape to close it off until you can get a replacement pipe.

Hi mate sorry for late reply
Have now changed out an injector that the shop sent back to me as one of mine but a wrong number on the body and they won’t accept responsibility as I should have double checked
Anyway I fitted a secondhand injector and it’s running much better but will not pass 74 mph no matter what
Any ideas welcome

Where the injectors' nozzles changed or just tested? Do you know the pressures (No 1 & No 2) they where tested/adjusted for? There's a change from August 2001 production when the No 2 pressure changed a lot, and No 1 changed a little. I think that must be at the same time that the 5 speed auto-box came.
Where I took my injectors to, one of the 2 best injector & IP places in Norway, they didn't know about that change - it wasn't in their books. (Or maybe they didn't look carefully. Just as an example of what might happen)

Thanks mate , but I have change injector 3 as the pulse through the feed pipe felt different to the bang/ pulse of the others and it seem to run a bit better well at least on 6 now
But it won’t pass 75 mph even though kick down seems to work it drops back
I’m going to swop 3 and 1 next just to see if the pulse in the feed pipe is still weaker
If it is I think it points to the pump
Any ideas welcome
I must do the the valve clearances too and see if that helps

When I took mine to a diesel specialist the first thing he said was ‘it won’t be the pump’ also the Toyota manual backs this up as does the design of the pump which is one piston distributed to 6 ports via 6 Delivery valves. What Toyota say is that if there is trouble it will be with the Delivery valves.

Valve clearances (I’m told) don’t cause massive differences if they’re out a little.

Have you established that your turbo is working? If you’ve disrupted vacuum pipework it needs checking. Do a drawing if it’s routing and post it up. Just a simple line drawing will do.

Hi there thanks
Good to hear the pump is rarely wrong
My reason for thinking pump is when I feel the diesel supply lines no 3 is weaker than 1 And2 as in , the bang- pulse vibration
I have already changed the injector
So now I’m going to swap 1 and 3 to see if the problem is still on 3 or in 1
Also I have noticed it won’t pass 75 mph
Kick down seems to make it fall back to 70
Seems to accelerate brilliantly from 50 to 70 great pull but not great up to 50
I’m wondering now about transmission speed sensor

It would be a good idea to stick a boost gauge in and make sure your turbo is boosting property. If your ECU is only seeing minor boost levels it won't increase fueling and thus limit your power. I once had a boost clip fail on the motorway and with 2-3 psi boost, it wouldn't really push past 70 and would feel sluggish

Thanks beau
I must ask about and see who might have a boost gauge
The other thing I have found is the obd in by the brake pedal has no power to it
I will have to chase the power , as the fuse is ok

I would try re installing your EGR, making sure everything is piped correctly and see if it runs better.
Did you drive the truck before working on it? did it run properly?
cheers

Hi john , I have actually reconnected the EGR and I will go through the pipe work today after I swap the injectors

Thanks John
I will try the EGR reinstall. Prior to it going dead there were no warnings no smoke no power loss it just went dead
When you turn the key it tries to start but doesn't
