Hi all!

Im new here and im shopping for a LC100. Since i live in Sweden, and theres not many 100's to buy here, im looking in Europe.
I have looked at this particular one, and I need your help with assessing if the rust on the frame is a go/no-go.

The seller have recently (what it looks like to me) sprayed the frame with some kind of rust protection body (Dinitrol?).
For me theres two reasons for that:
1. The most obvious one, the frame and parts has surface rust or worse, and he wants to cover it up with a quick fix.
2. He is honest and there was rust protection before that he wanted to top off...

Anyways, the truck is a 2005 and has 277k km/17k miles on it, the exterior and exterior looks good imo. He is asking €17.5k or approx $19k for it. Which is reasonable if the truck is in mint condition. Although after looking at posts at this forum and others, rusty frames seems to a big issue for the LC's (as with any other vehicle of course). But this is a truck i want to buy and keep for a long time.

Okay, enough of me jabbering. Heres some pics i got from the seller. Please have a look and give me your thoughts.

And links for the rest of the pics.

Welcome man! I've looked at all of the pictures in the link's you've given. From looking at them it shows the rusty bolts over the new underside paint... it show's that the painter has experience and not just a slap happy fire it on with the paint without removing the removable parts. Showing that he/she knew there's more to coat underneath! So suggests it wasn't a rush job and bang it out..

So it looks well done but how much preparation i.e were the surfaces ground down or wire brushed before coating, is the question to ask the seller? Before it was coated..

The real rusty ones have all the bolt on chassis parts falling as far as I have seen.

All the best with the decision..

Where is it located, that will tell you if its rusty or not.

iwan_t24, thats a good angle to it. Didnt think about that. I need to get some more info from the seller, thats for sure.
I realize one can only expect so much from a 15+ y.o vehicle driven on salty(?) roads. I just dont have the experience (from LCs) to tell if this one is in decent shape (rust wise) compared to other cars.

Dave, from what i understand it has lived its life in Luxembourg, now located in Germany.

Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

It looks good, overall.
There is rust under that black coat -- whether the rust is neutralised first is the question. If the coating is paint-like, there will be rust under it in the end. I would have preferred an oil treatment (which doesn't look as good, and has to be re-applied annually) where you can see the state of affairs.

The good parts: Looking at the tank protection/tray and the ahc actuators (which are clearly visible here) -- On 100 series I've seen with bad rust, these two components have looked much worse. The tank tray normally rusts through before anything else, but here it looks like a good thickness of steel around the holes. So, if the tray has not been changed, that's a good sign. Also the tank and filler pipe will rust through after only few years on salted roads. (Why the eck are these 3 parts not plastic?)

What you should look at is: the underside of the floor above the spare wheel (take wheel down), the rear wheel wells and the rear wings/corners (behind the rear wheels). Take off the rear lights and look inside the wing, it's open alle the way from the lamp to the wheel well, with some obstructions.

The tyres look much too small, what size are they; and the fender flares are ugly rust collectors, imho.

Btw, welcome to the club. Good to have another scandihooligan on here.

There are nearly mint 100s going around for €17.5k. Be patient. Setup a few mail alerts in mobile.de, autoscout, etc.
My very first post here was asking for the rust condition of a truck, that looking back now was honestly horrible :)

Took me 5 months to find the one I got eventually. No seat heater/viscous heater, as it was from Spain, but not a single spot of rust. €15k. Recently sourced the seat heaters for £120.

Also, don't look at the prices in the UK. It will make you cry how cheap they are, compared to the continent. Damn RHD!

Thanks for the tips, tray, fenders etc. Ill try to have a look at that. I agree, the tank tray looks to be in good shape. And who knows, it might have been replaced. But looking at other components, theres not really any sign of rot.
Ill try go get some information about the coating, what it is and if done professionally.

Yeah, tires.. Easily fixed =)

I guess thats the way to do it. How was the rest of the car, exterior/interior? Service records and so on?
Ill have wait and see what the seller comes back with. RHD is not an option at all.

Does anyone have experience with Italian cars, rust, mechanical condition?
