( Leak of some sort)

Hi Guys
I noticed an oil stain on my driveway today, no not that one but a new one .
So had a quick look and saw what appeared to be oil all the way from the top
of the diff breather down over the front axel and drip on my drive. Decided
it was an overfill of the diff oil from when I changed it last time but that
was months ago I said to myself, never the less it had to be it. Had a
better look at it while letting a little oil out of the diff only dripping
slowy, not really overfill but waited and looked and waited and looked. Now
here is the question.
At the top of the axle where the bottom half of the diff breather enters,
there are four pipes of various thickness in a bundle held by a plate, stwo
of them are hard and goto each wheel hub I think and another goes back down
towards the rear of the cruiser. The leak is coming from this collection of
pipes on top of the axle, what are they (the pipes all for).
Thanks

Hi John,
Those are brake pipes.
Do a thorough job of cleaning up all the pipes in the area, check your
brake fluid level and then go for a spin.
I would be surprised if it was brake fluid, but it could be diff oil,
although not from over filling since you only fill it to the level of
the fill hole - the only way to over fill it is if you are filling it
on a slope.
However the diff breathers are renowned for sweating a bit of oil out
on occasion, but anything more than the odd drip is a problem of some
sort.

Hi John
My Diff breather has been leaking for some time now and this + the leaking
inner oil seals was turning my driveway into quite a mess. I have fixed one
leak by replacing the inner oil seal but not the other two. Maybe its time
to extend your breathers and use clear tubing? That way you could monitor
the oil as it blows up the pipe? I certainly will be doing this myself. I
have soaked the cap in de greaser and wiggled it about and while filling the
diff I could hear air escaping out the hose so I know its clear. Why was I
forcing air out you ask??? I used a garden hose rammed into the filler hole
and a funnel from the top of the engine, once I thought I had enough in I
pulled the hose. worked a treat.

Hi Simon
I am getting the diff breathers done next week so my guy says along with
othere bits, clear tubing is a good idea. Also like you when I filled the
diff I could hear air escaping so I know the valve works. You should invest
in the the little pump with the tube at the end to fill the diffs, it works
great. O no did I just jive advice sorry I really am it wont happen again,
just getting a bit too cocky. Gos next I might even nearly know what im
talking about Nah.

Top tip of the day! Keep up the good work John. And you are right I should
have invested in one of those pumps but have not got round to it yet.

Hi Guys
I had another look at the leak and im sure its not the brakes but is the
diff breather, and it is dribbling over the axle.
Why would it leak or over flow now, I did nothing other than fit bigger
wheels etc.
Would that have something to do with it.
Will it get worse or go away and what needs to be done.

Hi John
I guess the options are:
a)drain some diff oil till it stops blowing out the breather (joke)
b)live with it and accept that it is part of the character of TLCs
c)replace your breather hoses with longer ones and this will stop it from
coming out the top as I think the hose is like mine i.e. old and dirty and
partially blocked which means the oil goes up it and then does not manage to
drain away before the next pulse of oil squirts up so eventually finding its
way out. Also it could be that the oil is contaminated with grease which
makes it thick and gloppy so not draining out properly as it is pushed up
the breather? What was the diff oil like the last time you drained it??

Hi John,
That's good news.
Probably driving too fast round a right hand corner or roundabout - all the
oil sloshed up to passenger side of the axle with a small amount spurting
out the breather!
It just proves that the breather works!
I wouldn't worry about it too much. The only thing to consider when
extending the breathers is to put an expansion tank on the axle breathers -
mine have a small expansion container on the chassis just above the axles
for just this reason - it allows the oil to squirt up there and then
dribble back down into the axle - just having a pipe would make it a little
more restrictive, although many make do with just a pipe.

Hi Guys
Geese thanks for the quick reply, its better than going down to the cruiser
specialist in the town, yea as if , cant even get a mechanic to look at it
with out asking me questions. Imagine asking me questions expecting answers.
Anyway the diff oil looks Ok I guess, not as clean as when it went in.
Julian what is an expansion container, where would it go, where would I get
one etc.
Just when I thought it was a simple matter of getting the guy who will be
putting in the OME stuff to extend the breathers now its expansion
container, never heard of it and I bet he dident either so ill have to
explain to him (hum). Thanks

Hi John,
It's just a plastic container/junction about the size of a fag packet with an
inlet at one end and an outlet at the other.
Not sure where you would get one, but would be pretty easy to make up.
