Greetings all
Just wondering if anyone has come across good Libyan Guide companies
thet you'd recommend.
In particular if there is a specific guide - that would be even better.
I've got some good leads from HUBB, but would be grateful to hear of
any experiences - good or bad form ELCO
Thanks
Niall

Niall,
I have travelled with Suleiman Alrabi of Saharastars and can recommend
him as good guy and honest person. He has very little English but
speaks French.

Cheers Roman
I have a little English and a little French - so could work! :)
I'm asuming you knew where you were going and he tagged along for the
ride and to comply with Libian regulations - or does he know the
desert also.
Thanks
Niall

Niall,
Not at all. He was The Guide, not a policeman (who btw was there to
watch the guide more than ourselves and was in the desert first time
ever). Suleiman knows the desert very well. Ask Toby Welburn as he has
travelled with him, too.

Hi Roman
No point trying to guide a guide I suppose!
Wasn't aware of need to bring a policeman.... there is sketchy info on
the HUBB about them.
Will be interesting to see what the story is when I talk to the boyz
in Saharastars.
I only have room for 1 passenger - lets hope someones granny isn't
required to come along aswell.....
Very interesting
Thanks
Niall

Niall
When are you leaving?

Hi Niall
Overland to Merseilles or Genoa to Tunis than to Rass Ajdir?
How long you going for?
What are your projected costs?
(You know I'm always interested in Libya!)

Havent a clue. All I know is in at Tunisia out at Egypt. If i'm going
to be forced to get a guide - he's going to earn his wages and I'm
going to sit back and chill !:)
Diesel is cheap @ 15 cents or so a litre. Yet to nail visa, guide
costs etc I'd say 5 or 6 hundred yo yo's
Guide rides shotgun. Is L'e Beast ready for the road???
Niall

Yes as Roman said, Suleiman is great chap, but does not speak a
lot and what he does speaks is French and Arabic.
A very experienced man (a Camel Caravan Driver in his youth)
You may drive for days in Dunes, over Lavafields, along Wadies
or perhaps over an endless featureless landscape, but he will get
you to exactly where you want to go, and that is without the use
of modern Maps, Compass or GPS.

Mornin' Renate
Bit of a non runner i'm afraid as I've only a seat for me and the
guide...... the rear seats are gone and the entire back area of the
vehicle is being kitted out.
Will be on the road for the guts of 5 months
Cheers

Tha's awright, I wasn't planning on going to Libya just yet (though I'M
always ready l'beast sadly isn't).
L'beast needs lots of TLC and should be ready for the road at the end of the
year - maybe sooner if some nice djin/ni decides to lend me a financial
helping hand...or I win the Euro Lottery...or get a really, really, really
well-paying job (it'd be done within a month or sooner if this were the
case...! then I'd be away and no looking back)
There are only two seats in mine at the minute...its being kitted out when
I've got the money to do it...maybe a sleeping platform and a couple of
shelves...I could go for a roof-top tent at some point but I'd rather kip in
the back or on the sand.
Julian might lend me his working area at some point; have to get the bits
first, and then go from here.
Cheers
Renate

Overlanding takes serious time, effort, determination and cash but as
you know the rewards are savage.
Keep at it - small steps!!
Re finding a well paid job...
I came across a website one day - where all aid agencies post their
job vacancies - was some crazy work in some crazy places - some coming
with the perks of travel and nice 105's.... pay wasn't too bad...
Good Luck for now
Niall

Niall
Shame you don't have the website! (one day indeed!) - crazy work in crazy
places sounds right up my street.
Probably UN; I don't mind risk - why else would I traipse to the Sahara, and
even Sudan!
Maybe it was working as a wildlife reporter/journalist like Tara Shine or
the other lady Saba something-or-other for the BBC - they use Landies though
(seems the BBC like to keep things essentially 'British' donchaknoe.
Ciao
Renate
