[lights] [bulbs]

John ,
Don't believe marketing hype about them being 60% brigther. What you
are getting is light colour, not intensity.
Been there, done that. Tell us when the =A315 bulbs burn out (which may
be rather sooner than later) :-(

Hi Roman
You are joking I hope. I thought that it was a good idea at the time. So I
suppose then in a while I will be here saying something like your were right
Roman, I should have sought advice before I bought them. So much for
independant thinking. I think I will give it a miss for a while and connect
to the collective instead and be asimulated with all the knowledge of the
collective.

Oh, c'mon John. Don't give up yet! We have made mistakes for you to
learn from, but likewise expect you to help us learn from your own
errors :)

Hi John,
Out of interest, who did you get them from?
The main improvement that you can do to the LC lights is to fit relays and
wiring so that they are taking their power directly from the battery - the
standard wiring is very poor with high voltage loss.
You can find out more info at:

Try it - you've nothing to lose. The latest Phillips / Osram "60% brighter" bulbs really ARE better than the standard halogen offering, but they won't achieve a magical transformation.
Just don't do what I did, which was to be taken in by the PIAA advertising ("our 60w bulbs give 130w output ...") and go that route. I spent a load more than =A315, and ended up taking them out after a fortnight as they were useless. In fact if anyone wants a set of barely used "Platinum white" PIAA H4 and H1 bulbs you can have them for the postage...
The real problem with the LC lights is the stock wiring which, on my truck, managed to lose around 2.5v volts between battery and bulb terminal. Since the relationship between bulb brightness and voltage is something close to voltage squared that loss makes one hell of a difference.
An upgraded wiring harness - cost =A350 - fixed that, and also allowed me to fit over-wattage bulbs (100/90w H4, 100w H1, both Phillips Rally from http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/).

Hi John,
Don't panic John - I have always upgraded my car headlights to the blue tint
Xenon style bulbs - they are more expensive and they don't last so long, but I
do find it easier to drive with at night and they are noticeably brighter,
particularly on high beam in the LC.
It does depend a lot on people's eyesight and night vision ability, but
personally being short sighted and wearing glasses/contact lenses all the time
I struggle with the yellowey colour you get from standard bulbs.

Hi christopher
Maybe they will be better just maybe. I have paid for them now ,just waiting
for them to arrive and test them out. I bought four sets in all at ?64 I
think so if they are no good I will try and return them. But first will give
them a chance. thanks for the tip on the wiring.
Are the bulbs you fitted road legal or off road ones. Cause im not sure if
the stronger ones would pass the test here, maybe as usual I could be
wrong.

No, over-wattage bulbs are not legal on post-1985 vehicles, and they come with the usual "for off-road and show use only" caveat. Legally you are limited to 60w main 55w dipped.
However unless the tester takes them out to inspect them (or squints incredibly carefully through the lens) he will never know, and my truck has been through 3 MoT tests now with them fitted. Adjusted correctly they don't give oncoming drivers a problem.
My views on the "super white" (or whatever they were called) PIAA bulbs were purely subjective, and I've seen other people on the 80s-cool list rave about them. Personally I find a slightly yellower light seems to penetrate better at night but, as Julian says, people's eyes and perception differ. However if you look up the diagrams showing sensitivity of the human eye vs wavelength of light you will see that sensitivity at the blue end of the spectrum is dreadful. For example no computer programmer would ever use blue text on a black background, as you simply can't read it!
Why not replace the bulbs on one side only and see how the two sides compare when shone against a wall or something?
