Lights on auto gear lever

Hi all,
Can anybody tell me whether the gear selection indicator of an 80 series
should be illuminated. Not the one the instrument panel, but on gear lever
enclosure.
Mine isn't lit, but I'm wondering if a bulb needs changing.

Yes it should be lit up so your bulb has most likely gone.

There is a single bulb for each selected gear on the dashboard, the one
for 'D' is obviously the most common to go first, but as Renate has
said, it is a pain to get the dash out to change these.
There is also a single bulb lighting up the panel at the bottom of the
gear selector, this is easier to change, with just four screws to remove
and it helps to unscrew the top of the transfer case gear lever.
As to the bulbs in the actual switches, if you are careful you can prise
the switches out and get at the bulbs, but the main pain is that there
are several different bulbs for the switches and dash so it's really a
two stage operation, one to get the old ones out and the other to put
the new ones in - it's also best to get them from the dealer, because
most motor factors will struggle to find the right ones.
Cheers,
Julian

This is all that is wrong with mine. Not a big deal really, just handy to
look at when setting off in the dark; saves having to glance up at the dash.
