when coming home tonight I was pulling onto a dual carriageway and the car felt like it spluttered/lost power, then the revs dropped. I got into another slip road and it cut out. The engine management light, VSC/TRC, traction control lights came on. I restarted the car And although the lights remain it ran fine.

Going to get it checked out, but does this sound like something anyone has come across? Just so I can go armed if it is….

It’s a 2007 D4D with 112k on.

Did you turn the car off and on? If the lights remained on then that's new to me.

Mine used to go into limp mode with similar experience to yours, and I needed to change the SCV and then the injectors to fix the issues.

Do you have techstream to check the error codes, this is where I'd start
 
Yes, turned over fine but the lights stayed. Was starting from cold and was planning on doing injectors next year but it might be coming sooner. It is rattly when cold, and then quietens down at temperature which was why I was planning on doing them

Have you ever tried this code reader on it? Chances are it won't be able to get any codes.

Some readers can get codes, but you need Techstream (or a garage £££££ equivalent) to scan all the systems.

Where are you based? Maybe someone can lend you techstream
 
No ive not had a reason to yet….have a couple so will try them and see

I’ve got green flag, but doubt the recovery trucks will have anything more than the type i can use.

In Sunderland, so if there’s anyone this way that does I’d be grateful!!!
 
If you end up going to a garage, make sure you get full details and the actual code numbers so you can let us know here. Sometimes people say 'the garage said it was blah blah' without the code, which doesn't help us!

If your code readers don't work, you might be able to use the paperclip and flashing light codes - there was a very recent post about it on here.

TBH I think the recovery trucks will have a fancy tool that works with most cars, I'd expect them to be able to pull the codes.

Might also be worth a post in the 120 section on TLOC to see if TonyC has any ideas.

Any other symptoms that you've noticed? Now that the lights are on, traction, cruise control etc won't work, so we expect that.

Does the gearbox still change up / down OK?

Speedo still work OK? (I know that sounds odd, but a fault in the speed wire from one of the sensors to the cluster/ECU cause those lights)

As long as its driving OK, probably something simple.

No other symptoms - a little bit smokey when cold and rattly, but put that down to injectors being about due.

Everything else (speedo fine, gearbox changing fine etc)

Hope it is, but will see. I’m wanting to keep it running so happy to do what is needed. the only thing that makes me think it may be something is the stutter Then cutting out.
 
The SCV is the Suction Control Valve and is the valve that regulates the fuel pressure on your high pressure diesel pump. When these fail, they can cause the engine to splutter and die, and I don't think there is much warning when they are about to go.

The original ones fitted by Toyota were short, but then they were redesigned and replaced with a longer version. The short ones are notoriously unreliable, and a lot of people change them to the longer version before they fail. There is loads of info on here about it, and TonyP mentioned it above.

They both showed the same codes, one gave text too. It is P0093 - Fuel System Leak Detected - large leak

Any signs of diesel pissing out anywhere? Have you got pressure on the diesel filter primer?

Could still be the SCV I suppose if it's broke and the fuel.pressure has dropped, that might cause a leak code. Let's see what the experts say.
 
I was defo getting large leak errors (sorry can't recall the code), which were resolved by changing the injectors.

Injector values can be checked to see if they are within tolerances. There is a pinned thread in the 120 section which has some good info
 
Karl - no diesel pissing out of anywhere…..no puddles and sitting at half a tank after driving home (gingerly) 5 miles…

Haven’t cleared the codes, as wasn’t sure if it is best to leave it to the experts.

Although it was driving normally, would it be best to get it recovered to the garage?

Thanks Tony - I had it in my head that it would need doing in the coming months, but the car may have decided sooner
 
Not an expert at all but if low fuel pressure and maybe have some seepage fuel got to go somewhere either in piston cylinders to be burnt off or seepage past sels and rings into sump just a suggestion might be worth checking the engine oil level
 

Symptoms of SCV failure
The most common symptoms are a lack of power or rough idling; both these faults may be intermittent. DTCs P1229 and P0093 relate to excessive pressure in the system caused by the SCV sticking open longer than it should and will cause the engine to go into failsafe mode where the engine power is restricted. DTC P0627 relates to the SCV circuit, this could be caused by an open or short circuit in the SCV field coil or in the wiring.
 
Thanks all - my mechanic has said to clear the codes as it may be a one off with running ok, but has given me the details of an injector specialist so I’ve got it booked in on Tuesday to be sure as I don’t want to leave it to chance. If they’re fine I’ll go down the SCV route

Hi Paul, SCV is cheaper and easier than injectors and will need to be changed sooner or later if its the short type.

Whos the injector specialist?
 
Ok thanks - probably get both checked and injectors are due so will get them tested initially.
