PS Julian
I think a forum like the Pajero Club is better, each posting is headed with
the subject and you can take it or leave it and skip over to a topic that's
more interesting - that should suit those who want model specific stuff.
Apart from that software - which you previously told me was not suitable -
there is also the 'proboards' software for forums which works the same but
is a little more simple.
What is really tedious is that some of our colleagues use software that
sends in a posting in several versions all at the same time - plus the same
repetition in their snippos - and we get pages (screenfulls) of the same
stuff - today even in green type. Other postings - and I am pleased to see
mine is one of them - are just one entry and no more. Its really a mess and
wants cleaning-up. I suggest that others look at the Pajero club UK or to
see the same software in a 4WD neutral theme - the PMR 446 (radio) forum.
Even 80scool are changing from the 1990's mailing list format to something
more modern - the yahoo list is somewhat tedious. I see no point in
re-inventing the wheel when others have done it for you and its free ! You
spend enough time on our behalf. Just cope with the moderating and use
other's software. That is enough of your time when you are trying to make a
living, manage a family, and bend out your tailgate !

[general site]

Hi Julian
I have been thinking about this and although I do not know much about the
cruisers and the computer set up etc etc, jeeze I could go on and on but
wont because I will get depressed. Jon in Bosnia and others have said a lot
of good things I hope from what I can understand of it all. It is great to
see the interest from every one. I think that if the e-mails get more
frequent than they are , it could become a pain and people may lose interest
in it all. Do you know of a forum called Difflock but of course you do,
stupid me again. I have found this one works very well for me.
Reasons
It is well laid out and simple to operate even for people like me,
It is divided into sections for each vehicle and then sub devided again,
If you post you can decide which part of the forum it goes in, the part you
are interested in only,
You can get e-mails regarding your post,
You can get e-mails from other sections of the forum that you have shown an
interest in by posting in those areas previously,
All this means that you do not get mail from sections you are not interested
in, but yet you can go through all the posts if you want in the sections you
want,
I just find it good and simple to operate, sorry if I have bored anyone.

Hi All,
The main reason for creating my own solution is that there are very few
products out there that offer the combined functionality of email list and web
forums.
Also, one of the areas that I specialise in is Accessibility - constructing
websites that can be used by people with disabilities - this is now a legal
requirement in the UK and will be across the rest of Europe pretty soon. To
date I have not been able to find any forum software that is fully accessible,
except for mine!
The key thing is how you manage your emails - if the management structure is in
place then emails are a lot more convenient - this is something that many
people struggle with.
If you don't have multiple accounts with your ISP so that you can separate list
traffic from private stuff, consider getting a GMail account, which is a web
based email account similar to Hotmail and others, but has the advantage of 1Gb
of storage space as well as some excellent search facilities.
If anyone wants a GMail account, I still have some invites available.

Good morning Julian,
I applaud some one who strives to make services open to all abilities
including the disabled but is this goal achievable or for the purposes of
ELCO and to risk being called politically incorrect how many 80 drivers are
so disabled that they can not gain access to a web -page or have I not
understood what you mean.
Do you think it may be worth while slowing down or halting positive
recruitment until a satisfactory solution is found for this problem?
I use mail filtering to sort out my mail as I am sure many others do. Does
every body really want to start opening up new accounts just for ELCO. It is
not just the amount of mail you get when logging on to you mail server and I
am on a very slow non broadband system at the moment which takes a fair
while to down load them all if left for a day. What would happen if you
were away for several weeks? I think that the real point is that it that it
would be very difficult to wade through hundreds of e-mails to find a single
bit of useful information that was not full of early morning chit chat. A
web based forum such as on Diff Lock is very easy to use and far more useful
as you can see at glance what you want to read and flick through stuff that
you do not. I find 80scool a pain and inconvenient to use and very slow and
cumbersome to search for information and I often give up and find the
information that I want in other 80 related web forums in the US.
Julian I am not having a go at your efforts, its just that I am not that
brilliant at expressing my thoughts succinctly on paper so please do not be
offended in any way by what I have written.
There are some really good people on ELCO and I hope that a satisfactory
solution comes to the fore soon.

Hi Anthony,
OK, before we go completely off track....
1. I am aware that some people don't want to receive so many emails so am
trying to find a solution.
2. Some people prefer email lists and others prefer web based forums. Rather
than opt for one or the other which could alienate some, I am trying to
provide a solution that offers both so that everyone is happy.
3. There are few existing products on the market that provide both options,
and of those that are available none of them are Accessible, which is why I
started to develop my own a couple of years ago.
4. As part of my work I am redeveloping and combining a number of web based
applications that I have developed over the years into a single product that
I will be marketing later in the year. As part of this project I am re-
developing my Accessible forum software to include an number of extra
features including the ability to provide email support so I am not exactly
reinventing the wheel.
5. One of the key selling points of the software that I am developing is that
is will be Accessible and therefore useable by people with disabilities.
This is an important issue and in theory all UK based websites should by law
adhere to the Accessibility standards, but few do. There are plans in the
pipeline to tighten up on the laws with cases being taken up against
organisations that do not make their sites Accessible.
Accessibility issues affect a large proportion of the population and covers
everything from issues with colour blindness, poor eyesight, blindness,
mobility issues, neurological disorders, the list goes on. Whilst they may
not affect you now, the chances are they will as you enter old age.
I appreciate that (hopefully) none of the current or future members of ELCO
members are affected by disability issues however that it is important for
the software that I am developing.
I currently do not have the time to spend putting a solution together
specifically for ELCO (whether that is developing something specifically or
using a 3rd party application) so am opting to move the list over to the
forum/list software, that is already in development, when it is finished.
Beyond telling a few people on other lists, I have been delaying more
concentrated recruitment until the new system is in place and some content
has been gathered for the website.
You would have missed the details of future plans for the site from when we
first started the list - there is a lot in the pipeline but it is going to
have to wait until I have completed the core block of development.
I am hoping that the route I have chosen will benefit everyone in the end so
please try to be patient.

Julian
Thank you for the clarification; I understand what you are saying and can
see the overall picture now and what your priorities are.
I shall remain quite on this matter until the next prompt from the rest
(hurray they say) and avoid cluttering up the list for more technical
scribblings.
Yours with new found patience
