LJ 70 Brakes

The brakes on my 70 have always been poor, when I got it the pedal was solid so I found a S/H servo which seemed to sort it out. However recently the have got worse. Basics are fine pads/ discs, drums/ shoes manually adjusted, brakes bled out buy various methods OK, vacuum pump is working and holding vacuum. The strange part is if I apply the brakes normally they are poor, if I apply them very slowly the braking effect build up and they are fine, if I pump the pedal they are fine, the pedal feels hard normally but the second 2 options is OK. Strangely it has passed the MOT no problems both years even with servo not working? My wife used it yesterday and was not impressed!!
Any thoughts??

David,
Have you completely changed the fluid? Does not sound like that
but always worth doing. It sounds as if your servo is slow, have you
checked the vacuum lines?, or the servo for leaks.

Hi David,

Don=92t know a huge amount about diesel brake systems but a few thoughts.

Is the servo working currently and is the vacuum pump operating consistent
and reliable? Reason I am thinking about the pump is perhaps you are not
getting sufficient vacuum from the pump so the slow application is OK but
rapid application is not? Hard to check on a diesel, on a petrol it is
usually very easy to put a gauge on with a tee somewhere.

The MOT does by require only a slow application of the brakes without
locking them up and then slow release.
