Hi, All,
the continuing saga of my LJ 78 means that we are now trying to find aother
block for it, the cylinder liners are cracked, some say that a block from
Surf/Hi-Lux/Hi-Ace/ 4-Runner would fit but Ihaven't been able to get any
info on that, the vehicle is a 1991, LJ 78 LandCruiser, Chassis; LJ 78
0013578, Engine: 2L-TE, can anyone help ?, I am based in mid Portugal but in
London every month,
Regards,
Chris.

Chris,
If it's just the liners, why do you want to change the whole block? A
S/H block would require at least rehoning the liners, which leads to
chaning the rings and possibly pistons.
If the block is not cracked, why not having it relined, than just fit
new rings (if required)?

Hi everyone,
This is my first posting.. so HELLO!
Regarding the LJ78 I can confirm that the 2L-TE engine is exactly the
same engine as fitted to the hilux surf (2.4 turbo diesel).
A good place to start would be ebay as there are usually adverts for
people breaking them,I also own an LJ78 and have had to do some
research
into finding spares. The LJ78 shares quite a few parts with the surf.
Anyway hope this helps!
regards,
Eric.

Hi Eric/Chris,
If that's the case I know one of the guys involved in running the Uk
Surf club and will be seeing him at Salisbury Plain this weekend so
could ask him if he knows of any around.
Are you after a new one or second hand?

I think that engine is common to a lot of toy's from that era. My wife
has a LJ71 and that has the 2L-TE in as well, it will be at salisbury.

Chris, spoke to the Surf chap and he thinks he knows of one or two,
I'll let you know more when I find out.

Hi Chris,
Yes they will as long as they are 2LII-TE blocks a 2LII-T one won't as
it does not have provision in the block for the crank angle sensor. Your
engine is a 2LII-TE not 2L-TE the 2L-TE is pre aug 1988. Your block
should not have liners as the bores are machined straight into the cast
iron.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi,
My wife's HJ 71 has a 2L-TE and I believe it to be a genuine
1990. I will check this given time with the car.
Regards, Clive.

Hi, all,
thanks again to Julian and Craig, the plate in the engine definitely shows
the engine as a 2L-TE, got me a bit worried now!, anyway very helpful to
know that a Surf 2L-TE will fit, I will keep looking but as I said ,I do
have a deposit on this engine in the UK, it's =A3800, hurts a bit since I have
just spent =A31,500 having it fixed after the head went, we are probably well
beyond the value of the vehicle but my other half and the kids love this old
LC and demand it get's fixed!.
Best Regards,
Chris.

Hi Chris,
Your supplier should no the difference between a makI and MKII 2L-TE,
you are right your firewall tag will say 2L-TE but your engine is a post
aug 1988 therefore it is a mkII engine. The easiest way to tell them
aprt is the mkI has a aluminium tappet cover and roller cam, the mkII
has a stamped tin tappet cover and inverted buckets and shims with a
direct acting cam. The E engines have a crank angle sensor in the block
just below where the injection lines come out of the end of the
injection pump (it does not hurt to undo the 6mm bolt and pull the
sensor out and look in the sensor hole to make sure you see a lump on
the no2 crank counterweight to trigger it, as I have seen 2L-TE blocks
with 2L-T cranks and they won't run well).
Cheers,
Craig.

Hello All,
Some may remember my long and protracted story of my LJ 78 and it=E2=80=99s overheating problems last year, as it had just 70K Kms on the clock and bodily was excellent I decided to have the engine re-built, then had a new custom heavy duty radiator made for it plus new A/T cooler , S/S exhaust and much more, it ran very well indeed and after 2K Kms it was just loosening up, then my partners ex borrowed it for =E2=80=9Ca quick trip home=E2=80=9D, into a ditch it went and the next day after a change of front tyre off he set for the garage ,on the way he stuffed it into another ditch!, this time he managed to bend the front r/h of the chassis by 2cm, outwardly it is unmarked and drives well but it has this chassis problem, after several thousands of =E2=82=AC=E2=80=99s I am not minded to pour in more, so here it sits with me wondering what to do?, as I am in Mid-Portugal I am not keen on driving it to the UK, ( think it would drive there ok) but am a bit reluctant to scrap it, several Toyota based vehicles use the same 2.4Ltr engine and as it was re-built with new head and other new parts, including a new thermo fan unit it should sell to somebody, I just can=E2=80=99t bring myself to scrap the old LC.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received, after the thousands spent I would rather it went cheaply to a deserving person, anyway anybody got some ideas?,
Regards,
Chris.

Hi Chris
Is it not possible to correct the chassis problem either by fixing it or replacing it.
I dont know but just asking if you have thought of this.

You could just straighten the chassis as best as you can with a hydraulic jack, chain block etc. You might need to weld some temporary braces to the chassis and improvise a little. It might be easier than you think to get it quite close.

Just consider all the home brew suspension setups with spring over axle and the rest, bet most of them end up introducing some miss alignment but because of the live axles they get away with it.. supposing it isn=E2=80=99t IFS on the front?

PS don=E2=80=99t lend it out.

Re what to do with the LJ 78

That sounds like a savage machine.

Too nice to scrap!

Rekon you'd get good money for that in Morocco. Might be worth exploring disposing of it down there. Check Chris Scott's website for some brilliant stories about driving old mercedes down there and flogging them to pay for the trip & finance a flight home - and generally have a load of craic (not cocaine type) http://www.sahara-overland.com/Sfiles/index.htm have a read of a few if you get the time - very funny.

Good luck

NIall

PS - will swap your bus for shotgun if you need one for the lad that smashed it. Actually - will swap for a nissan Note with all the extras

Julian and Malcolm,
Thanks for the input, very welcome, I am going to get it somewhere where I
can play with it and then evaluate it from there, if I just use it for going
up into the mountains off road around here it would be ok, actually we have
a large off road circuit here near the village, maybe play on that,
Thanks again,
Chris.
