Maybe I just don't the picture of my KZJ70 looking/performing like a pinin
or even a freelander. I have always seen it as a workhorse like a land rover
defender :).
They are pretty basic when it comes to luxuries and comfort ride is not the
best on the road, especially when you put springs on etc..and they don't
have the mod cons of the 80 series and above.
I do agree with you they are the poor mans TLC.. so no argument meant just
had visions of a Pinin going up the trail ;-)

Don't worry Martin, we are all very much attached at the hip to our
favourite vehicle; and if we have not seen it perform at the extreme
ends of use then we may not fully realise its limitations. Like, we
all think our 80's are wonderful in the mud until a Unimog comes
along - is that why Gareth has one ;-)
(I saw a Unimog working in Liberia last November earning $2500 a day,
every day, towing trucks up a hill)
Andy said it all really, and the key words were 'light duty'.
That is where I get the comparison with the other 2 models that upset
you so much ! But if you saw the more common variant of your model
in the 3 door SWB version, out in the wild, you will realise how
dinky they can be.
If it makes you feel any better, if asked which 15 year old model I
would prefer instead of an 80 I would immediately recommend a
4Runner. I once had one of those, also ex UN operations and the
superb ground clearance, tight turning circle, and smooth automotive
(not truck derived) gearbox makes it a lovely car to drive in tough
conditions, despite the torsion bar suspension on the front !
Enjoy what you have and aspire to a 200 - one day !
Cheers
