LJ78 2.4

What do we think of LJ78's?
There's a 1992 for sale quite close to me.
Are they as good as 80's?
Are parts easily come by?
Are they as easy to work on as 80's
Any thoughts?
Pete

In the panel's opinion, what would be a reasonable price for one of these
assuming it's in reasonable nick? It's a 2.5TD advertised with 104K miles on
the clock.
Are they a vehicle worth having or am I better off waiting for a decent 80
to appear? I mean this vehicle, whatever it turns out to be is not going to
be overlanded and used in extreme conditions, just a local runabout really.
Opinions?

Head gasket problems have been known on the engine, 2.5TD engine is though
quite well though of.

I can=92t say I am a fan of engines that size in a 4x4, the first Nissan
Navara used the same size engine and only a small sump. Engine seems to be
working too hard and gets killed by motorway driving, almost as if it has
too much =93go=94 for it=92s own good and encourages driving at 80mph when it
can=92t do it long term. Fuel economy on the Nissan engine was not good =96
18mpg on one long motorway run, SWB Transit with Ford 2.5TD was doing close
to 30mpg on same run.

Some reading about LJ78=92s here. HYPERLINK

I am of the opinion that a car that size needs at least a 3.0L engine,
which I believe was an option.

Hi Peter,
I completely agree with Clive - too weak engine. I owned KZJ95
(colorado, prado ...) with 3.0 TD engine (1KZ-TE) and I would never go
smaller then that.

A bit gutless, but the bottom end of the engine is bulletproof. However the top end is a different story. The 2LT (UK) or 2LTE (import) suffer from cracked heads very often, lots of potential reasons and a new head at around 450 pounds is the only solution. Timing belt is a PITA to change unlike the 80 diesel.
They are easy to work on apart from that though. Not as good a vehicle as a heavy duty 7x model or an 80 but still beat the pants off most 4x4s.
As has been said, post 94 with the 1KZT or 1KZTE engine is better, however these are also now cracking heads however less so than the 2LT. Easier to work on the engine too- apart from the turbo.
Cheers

Peter, they are very much a poor man's TLC. A bit like the
'junior' models of ranges like the Mitsi Pajero 'Pinin' or dare I
say the LR Freelander.
Stay away.

Yes, but it's cheap, looks nice (IMHO) and would only be used by me as a
runaround; I have no intentions of offroading it other than perhaps some
very mild green laning.

Cough cough ;-).
My 70 goes places where most over vehicles wont.
You cannot compare a 70 series to a pinin or freelander, hehe...
For offRoading the 70 is a very good motor, although I have the 1KZT in mine
and would not go for a 2.4td.

Martin, no argument. I have seen plenty of the small engined 70's in
the Balkans, and I have bought plenty 70 troopies, hi-luxes, 80's and
90's for aid agency work. I have witnessed which are worth the money
and can stand-up to continuous use and abuse.

For what you have said you want to do with it, yes I would buy it if it is
nice condition. Personally I like the 78 series trucks, yes the 2.4TD engine
has it's issues, but as long as you get it cheap or put aside =A3500 for a new
head just in case, then the rest of them is well built and strong. With the
head working OK the 2.4TD can go as long as an 80 series diesel without any
work, the bottom end is bombproof. It's basically a Turbo'd Hilux engine and
they go on for ever, abused by Builders and the like and very rarely
complain.
Yes the Heavy Duty 1HZ engined &X trucks are stronger but to be honest it is
a Land Cruiser after all. I know of people using them in Canada in
ridiculously cold conditions, doing real challenging off-road work and they
are perfectly capable of anything you throw at them.
However, and this is a big one, don't pay too much for it, it shouldn't be
worth what an 80 series is.

Hi,
Maybe I just don't the picture of my KZJ70 looking/performing like a pinin
or even a freelander. I have always seen it as a workhorse like a land rover
defender :).
They are pretty basic when it comes to luxuries and comfort ride is not the
best on the road, especially when you put springs on etc..and they don't
have the mod cons of the 80 series and above.
I do agree with you they are the poor mans TLC.. so no argument meant just
had visions of a Pinin going up the trail ;-)
Martin.

It's an import then with AC, suede and two stage suspension setting as these
were never fitted on the UK 2.4s. I think AC only came in on the last of the
3 litre ones.
So yes the price seems pretty good. The mileage is OK.
I'd take it for a drive and see how it drives. There is enough money left
over if the head goes to still be worth spending the money on.
A mate in Canada has exactly the same spec 78. Got some pictures of it off
road in the winter on a run they do every year with quite a few others.
Certainly coped with everything thown at it.
One thing to do if you get it is to drain and flush the coolant and use
Toyota antifreeze. They are a bugger to fill up, as you can get airlocks,
best thing to do is to fill really slowly and then run the engine with the
radiator cap off and squeeze the heater and radiator hoses until all the
visible air is removed. Also when filling make sure the control for the rear
heater is open otherwise you will never get the air out. Also see if you can
get a 1.1 bar radiator cap for it (the standard is 0.9 bar. It is better
with the 1.1 bar).
Do Oil and filters (including the fuel filter) and then you should be good
to go.
if it has been in the country for a while then hopefully the coolant drain
will have been done, but it is a good precaution anyway.
Cheers
Andy
