Hi all,

Our 2003 land cruiser 120 1kd is taking longer than normal to start when cold... and also when cold it has less power.. even when revving the engine stationery. Check engine illuminates after a few mins when running. Sometimes it also shuts off a few seconds after startup.

Vehicle has 116 000 miles.

I have not yet checked the error codes but did anyone have this problem or similar please?

Thanks
Daniel.

If the symptoms are completely gone at running temp then its either a heaterplug/relay issue or a fuel issue related to advanced startup which in turn could be a temp sensor somewhere.

Grab a voltmeter and check voltage to the heater plugs when ignition is turned on. No voltage =fuse/relay problem. If voltage present the do a continuity test on the plugs.

Could be fuel pressure drop either buy faulty injector or leak somewhere but money is on first option

One other possibility if IRL’s suggestions check out ok is the spill control valve on the injection pump. These are pretty much plug and play to change as long as the area around them is scrubbed scrupulously clean as not a grain of dirt must get in.

To check continuity on the heater plugs the common bar that links the terminals will need to be removed to check each individually unless you possess a current clamp meter that reads DC currents. Tell tale signs of heater plug failure are hard starting and white smoke from the exhaust.

If it’s got worse over time it may also be worth checking the inlet manifold for being choked with black gunge caused by the EGR system.

First thing to do is read the codes and go from there.
