Hi all
A similar post to this has been posted in the past but it didn't answer the problem
I have a 100 series 2004 model. Twice now while driving at 30 mph the engine has gone into limp mode or no power with the engine still running in drive and the engine management light has come on . After turning the engine off and restarted all well . It has done it twice now so I need to find the root cause
Can anyone help
I guess I need the code read. Does it matter which port I use either the one in the drivers footwell or the one on the drivers wing ?
Can anyone also suggest a good quality reader to buy
Many thanks all

Best way is to use Techstream to read the code to point you in the right general direction.

Yes to TechStream and mini-VCI. And absolutely the cheapest. It goes into the OBD port under the steering wheel. Often when you buy a copy miniVCI cable, the TechStream app is included.

Can you tell a bit more about how the car behaves, and what's been done with it?
Like:
Which fuel filter ?
Has the tank filter been changed?
Have you checked the vacuum lines?
Does it always start easily?
What if you maintain full power up a long hill - is that OK?
What's the situation when the engine light comes on?
Do you have a particulate filter in place?

Have you tried a wiggle test whilst it's running? Especially try the plugs on the spill control value, it's a known week area?

Where are you based?

Hi and thanks for your replies
I'm based near matlock
Spill control valve? What does it look like and where will I find it ?
Fuel filter Fitted last year by Toyota
Tank filter probably changed 3 years ago when new tank fitted
Haven't checked vacuum lines
Had the car 6 urs starts easily al the time
Never given it full power for a long time up a hill. But once about a year ago while on motorway doing 70 on cruise. I hit a hill, it kicked down the revs increased dramatically and the engine management light came on . I dropped the revs but it stayed on. On stopping and restarting the light went out
The last 2 occasions about a week or so apart, I was doing about 30 and the suddenly dropped with loss of power. The engine management light came on . The engine was still running but when pushing the throttle the revs would not increase. The engine was still in Drive but no power was going to the wheels. Once again I turned the engine off and it restarted without any issues and the engine management light went out
I don't know if I have a particulate filter. Where would I find it ,,?

Thanks for your help

As it's an 04, it probably has the VNT turbo, which can get a bit sticky and over boost. Anecdotal evidence is it happens more if you run super market fuel and not if you run something like BP Ultimate. You need to read the code to know though.

Many thanks for that ill get the code read
I only use Costco diesel
Thanks again

The particulate filter is a "little blob" on the front part of the exhaust pipe. It gets blocked by gunk from the engine. Fault code is often "abnormal turbo pressure", because the blocked filter chokes the engine. The test is to replace the filter with a straight pipe and see if all your problems go away.

The diesel filter can be of the wrong type, even if it is changed by a dealer, but not that likely. The problem is that many filters fit physically, but some have too little space for fuel flow between the filter and the filter holder.

Spill control valve is on the injection pump (IP), and is powered by the EDU sitting on the wing next to the IP. There is a plug on the cable which has been known to give problems. Pre 2003 it was standard to have that problem, but on the facelift, 5-speed model, it is not that common.

Edit: "Little blob" means that it is smaller than a normal mufler/silencer...

Thanks for the latest info. I'll have a rummage around under the bonnet

Hi all had my local.garage do a diagnostic which read
19 (4) Acelorator closed position switch circuit open
The garage were none the wiser so I've booked it into a 4x4 specialist in Glossop
Is this a job I could easily remedy myself ?
Cheers all

Open circuit - have you checked all the fuses? Else probably bad connection or broken wire

Any chance you could send me picture of where the connectors are please

Sorry mate i can't - dont have a 100, just a generic suggestion on where I'd start!

Iirc, that would be the idle switch on the accelerator pedal. There's a little switch attached to the pedal assembly which can fail. I had that, and just fixed the switch itself. Can't remember if I replaced or repaired, but only the little switch was defective, telling the ECU that the pedal was at idle position even when it wasn't.

Is it possible just to buy the sensor from somewhere on its own as Toyota will only sell it as a complete unit...a bit steep

Amayama have got it too about £300 with postage. Not sure what the duty situation is, but I don't think I paid any last time I had parts from japan
