My 60 series has suffered what appears to be a terminal engine failure in Italy
RAC have told me that contrary to my belief I do not have European Breakdown Cover so I will have to recover the vehicle myself. Does anyone know where I might be able to hire a low loader/recovery truck so I can retrieve it? It weighs about 2.5 tons.

Sorry to hear this Andy.. do you think Maarten and Laurens could help you to get you at least to their HQ?

They're quite used to carrying 60's over distance and they enjoy it too... Just an idea..

Their pricing is somewhat prohibitive!

If it were me i think i'd fly home and go back with one of these https://selfdrivetransporterhire.co.uk/
Only carry 1.5 ton though. You'd need a 7.5 ton lorry to be legal or as said a 3.5 t trailer. They also only allow 200 miles per day on hire agreement and charge for every mile above that. Some bank accounts offer recovery service as part of a package but not sure if that would include European recovery. Could be cheaper to get an engine sent out on a pallet and fitted locally.

Difficulty is finding a reputable garage in the time I have available.

Come to think of it you might be equal distance from Clive in Romania - could be a big saving going that way instead assuming they can get your truck running again

Sorry to hear about this, Shane's idea volunteering Clive reminds me that there is a reputable company in Hungary if it's any help, you could also have a conversation with Sandlander as they are Land Cruiser specialists and have experience with overland prepped cruisers and the like, I believe one or more of their mechanics are former truck racer's/mechanics, link below, I have also thought you could try Tony Anderson on this forum, he specializes in boat transport to/from the continent and is a member on this forum, his company goes by the name of tonytugboats.

Where in Italy are you? There's a big difference between what to do in Napoli (ship home) or in the Alps. There is also an Italian LC forum where you might find help.

I’m in Milan

it's going to cost whatever way you do it.
A transit or similar wont be able to carry it.
3.5t trailer or 7.5t lorry or above is the options.
I'd say best way would be engine shipped and fitted then drive back. you will still have to fit an engine when home anyway.

I think biting the bullet and paying to get it shipped back home is the No.1 and only realistic option IMO. Personally I wouldn’t even consider getting an engine shipped out and fitted, there’s just too many potential problems, even if the engine is a guaranteed good unit, numerous other issues could arise and if they do and the truck is in bits in Italy your stuffed. Numerous shipping options exist, just a case of finding the best price. JMO

If you decide to have a engine fitted there let me know.

I know a Belgium fella who sources cruiser engines on the continent and exports. Low miles and will provide compression figures. Should be able to recommend a garage too.

There's also wink over in Holland.

If you do bring it back I'd be looking at fitting a 1hd t or ft. :icon-wink:

Andy has an engine waiting, genuine 80K with turbo and intercooler.

If you get chance Moggy, Contact local Haulage firms in the area, Most haulage firms will be running up to France and Calais/Dover.. Someone might know Someone who could help.. Thats if you have exhausted all avenues via the Internet... If some one can get it to Dover I can help out with the rest of the Journey/ collect and store if need be... Sorry about your predicament Mate.... My opinion is get it recovered by someone Local back to the UK. Its about a 1500 mile round trip if you were to use a UK firm or do it your self (Self drive)... Cost of ferry tickets/ Diesel/Peage, etc would be Mental...

Sorry to hear about this Andy.:icon-cry:

It’s a long-shot, but I could enquire this end, but TBH, unless it was being hauled here for repair, anywhere else would be of no use logistically.

I can’t imagine finding a replacement engine here being an easy task, whatever engine you may choose mate.

Best bet is to get it back to the uk by some means IMO, then you have choices and more time to sort it.
