Matt, not wishing to upset you any further >:-} but - it started snowing
with us Monday night, we got the big storm that crossed Austria, I left
early Tuesday for a 400km drive and had to fight my way out of the city
past slewed trucks and rolled Golfs. Then we romped out to the central
mountains - no chains so far. Once at my remote office we achieved all
goals on the itinerary - life goes on here in snow. On Wednesday night the
TV news said the official depth of snow at the city weather station was 97
centimetres :) . Yes a yard of the stuff, its been at it again for another
24 hours and still falling steadily as I write at 8 on Saturday morning, so
possibly another 25cms on top. When done emailing I have to go out and
clear a space in front of the garage and we are running out of places to
throw it. The only time I needed chains on my three day trip was, as
always, to get up the mountain where I live in a city suburb, to grip
through the compacted snow on a steep ramp in my street.
So on to the technical stuff. We use an Austrian made diamond link quick
fit cable-on-the-inside type of chain, of good quality. Make unknown as
they are imported and own-branded by the local car accessory importer -
Avanti. They are not too good at getting spares, though do have some repair
links. One thing they can't get is the rubber bungee tensioner for the
small link tensioning chain. I see that your make have the same device. So
can you get these things as spares easily ?
Oh yes, the snow is the dry powder stuff at last, so its off to a party on
Jahorina -one of the Olympic ski mountains - for some snowboarding today.
Cheers

Dear Jon,
That sounds brilliant! I love the snow and everything about it. I've not been skiing for years and I want to go now! Ages ago I used to have an old Peugeot 404 family estate with some knobbly tyres on the back. That was great fun in the snow with 7 people in it!
I'll find out about spare parts for the chains. I sell PEWAG and I'd guess that the Avanti chains might be PEWAGs in different packaging. But Austria do have a few good snow chain manufactures. I'll look in to it.
Cheers,
Matt, Derbyshire UK

Thanks Matt, I am sure they are not Pewag, Rus, Weissenfels or any others I
can find websites for. Pewags have a different means of securing the
tensioner chain, and come to think of it, so do the others.
No matter, the fact that you can't immediately reply suggests that you have
no call for the tensioners, hence no response on spares - I suggest a sign
of the quality of your Pewags :)
FWIW - By the way, I always follow the advice to release the tensioner
whenever parked - in the day at the office or at night in the garage. Its
not the reason for wanting a spare one, I just wear belt and braces. But
if anyone is using these in really cold weather they are best advised to
release the tensioner immediately they park as the rubber is slightly warm
and it will contract over 10 minutes or so after release. Otherwise it
seems to freeze when its parked under tension and then they are loose next
time you start off. A couple of cycles like this and they then perish.

Hi Jon,
Sorry I didn't get back to you about the spare parts for the snow chains. I can get spare PEWAG bits and I would guess the rubber tensioning bit would be about =A312.00. But these should all be made to withstand the cold so they should not break due to temperature changes. Obviously if you scrape them against a rock they my well snap!
However, if this were to happen I'm sure you could use some knicker elastic or something similar to get home. Make sure your wife is with you!
Cheers,
Matt
