Milner 80 series Stub Axles Warning

Hi All,

Following Ian's problems yesterday I have been doing some digging around
and it appears that there are some major issues with the stub axles that
Milner supplies for 80 series.

By their own admission the stub axles are too long by a few mm which
results in the fact that they can end up grinding into the back of the
end plates as Ian and now I discover others have experienced.

Talking to them about it they say that any experienced fitter will
notice the problem and modify them appropriately - not exactly helpful
espescially since most people will assume that the parts are fine, which
has prompted me to post this message.

I have made a more detailed comparison of a Toyota and Milner stub axle
and it also appears that the Milner part is designed so that the inner
hub seal can end up rubbing against the rear of the stub axle making it
harder to torque up the hub nuts and leading to premature wear which I
think may the cause of Chas' wheel falling off and another client's
wheel nearly falling off because the wheel bearings keep on getting
loose.

So, if you need stub axles steer clear of the Milner ones and if you
already have the Milner ones installed consider swapping them out for
genuine Toyota.
Having said all this, don't get put off all the Milner parts, most of
their parts are genuine Toyota and many of the pattern parts are pretty
good

Is there not a case for some form of compensation here? If Milner admit the
parts are not to the correct specification and if it was the cause of Chas'
problem (which could have been much more serious) and others.... ??

You would have thought so, but the 'tech support' guy didn't seem to be that concerned.
I'm going to try to talk to the MD at Milners today about it to see what he has to say.

Hi Guys
With all the talk about the stub axles I would like to know if I can.
The stub axle is connected to the diff on one side and the Cv on the other
correct.
If this axle breaks how do you get the broken bit out of the axle housing
that is attached to the diff.
What kind of pressure would it need to break one, like hitting a rock with
the wheel or turning and hitting a boulder etc.
Just trying to mentally picture what could break it.
thanks

Morning John,
The stub axle is on the steering knuckle and holds the CV in the knuckle and the hub slides on to it.

I had to have one replaced about 5 years ago. The bearing gummed up somehow, and the inner race housing started turning on the stub axle and chewed up its surface. It makes an interesting noise in the process!
The replacement was a Toyota one ... I hope ... about =A3180 at the time anyway, and I haven't had any trouble since. That was about 65k miles ago.

I have written to Milners highlighting the issues people have been having (five cases so far) and will report back.
I am also investigating issues with some of their other products.

Thanks Julian
As usual I get it wrong or mixed up.
Toyota replaced this stub axle when they finally fixed their mess up with
my bearings ,the wheel was very loose and hitting off the caliper and had
worn away at some part of this.
So how do you get the half shaft out if it breaks and is still connected to
the diff.
cheers
