Just joined, going to be dipping my feet into the Land Cruiser world as I'm about to make my first Toyota purchase.
Had Subaru pickups and Fourtraks in the very distant past - now looking for a second hand LandCruiser for family fun on the weekends :)
Based in the South of the UK, between London & the giant ring road of pain, so much countryside out there to explore.
Will be quizzing you all with the basics I expect so I apologise in advance :)
Not sure yet what to get but love the 80 series and would love to get a auto VX or similar.

Happy trails

James

Planning on a late 1990 80's VX if I can find one for around 6-7K I just have no idea which Engine to be looking for, would like all the power but slightly worried on fuel consumption - Diesel is the way to go but which engine!

Welcome James,
The engine will largely be dictated by the model year and fuel. On diesel in a late 80 UK model there’s the 1hd-ft. Great engine and very reliable with plenty of info on it and the 80 series in general on here. There’s also members’ trucks sometimes come up and members that are willing to look over a truck if it’s too far to go.

Good luck with the search.

Best wishes
Rich

Thanks Rich,
So my hunt now begins for a 1hd-te!
It seems like a very solid community, have been reading a lot -much to take in.
You hit upon a very real issue, buying is going to be a little problematic for me as I really don't know what I'm looking for and a impartial expert opinion would always be welcomed, I see a few threads on what to watch out for so will go and study!

Just realised my name, can a mod change this for me, can't seem to find a way in the settings, if it could be changed to James GrP - that would be great :)

Thanks Jacob
Thanks for the links, will have a look.
Will reach out to Andy as well!

@James I don't know about this engine hunt to be honest. I would happily take a better condition 1hd-t over a worse condition 1hdte. Even the newest of the last lot are now 20+ old. Looking for condition and use intended should trump engine and year, imho.

Also, there are a few forum members who have trucks on sale (and they curate these, and will continue to support you and the truck ongoing ).

Highly recommended talking to these guys once and talking to them first, if nothing else there is a lot of learnings to be had.

Thanks GeekOKent, wise words and I appreciate your candid comment.
I'll take a look and reach out, can't afford to make a mistake and I would rather purchase from someone in the know than random private/dealer who does not specialise.
Indeed - I have a heck of a lot to learn, which I have the time to do - just hope I have the patience :)

Thanks for the links, they bounce me to amazon for some reason !

KB (GoK) is right, it’s not really the main criteria tbh. The 1hd-t 12 valve is also an excellent engine but stops at 1994 the later 1hd-ft engine is mechanical but is then a 1hd-fte but I’m not certain there were any in the 80s.

Just corrected my earlier post as it should have read 1hd-ft not 1hd-te.

Welcome aboard James, all been said I think, but I wonder why nobody mentions the HZJ80...

Runs and hides....

The true million mile engine. 1hz all the way, besides turbos are over rated anyway.

Problem with the 1hz is it's hard to find here in the UK.

Thanks for all your replies, this has to be the friendliest and most knowledgeable forum I think I have ever visited. I have a heck of a lot of reading to do and a lot of searching - do let me know if anyone spots something I may like :)

These VigLinks are confusing me - i thought people were linking things but it seems like its capturing tagged words (truck, engine etc.)
Subscribed, that gets rid of these links and also helps the site I hope.

It gets rid of the ads James, not sure about the red words as I mostly ignore them now. I don’t think they are part of the site.

It is a very friendly helpful forum full of great people that love their cruisers so you’ve come to the right place.

Just found this locally, high price but low miles - not sure if its a 100 or 105 - if 105 that's solid front axle i think.
Interior is is good condition so a wife pleaser :)

Worth a trek to view?

Looks tidy but they can be very deceiving till you get underneath... Almost certain to be a 100 not a 105 though IMO, I wouldn’t know the difference without a view of the front end underneath...
