MPH TO KPH Moan and GATSO speed cameras

Well, old chum, seems all govs in British Isles (and even Eire) like
the idea of messing up drivers and MPH/KPH is just another spanner in
the works; we have more speed cameras per hectare than the whole of
Europe put together (well, its not that bad, but its bad enough).
Take me for instance.
Our yellow friendly gatso cameras flashed at me twice in one day -
Three times x 2, once in the morning and once in the evening. They're
supposed to flash twice and then a thrid time after a pause - did they
flash in the order they are supposed to? no! my contact says they're
supposed to flash once if there is no film, twice if there is film and
one is caught speeding - once to take the regis number the second to
confirm the regis number, and then a third time to get you.
I so far haven't received a letter from the police (6th Dec 04 was when
it happened) they are supposed to send you a letter within 14 days and
an extra three days in case of post delays - apparently I am within my
right to refuse to pay if the letter is received by me after the third
week (21 days).
I know this subject is a little off-list, but I thought this info might
help others who have been flashed at, and the code for the flashing
sequence, and what it means.

Hi Guys
Just thought I would let you all know that our wonderful Gov had
decided to
replace all the mph limits with kph. That may sound great but all the
vehicles up to now have there speedos in mph We also have a penelty
points
system for a wide range of driving offences, can you imagine the
problem
now. Its hard enough looking at your speedo every 30 or so seconds to
make
sure you have not been speeding but now we will have to look at the
mph
then change it to kph aswell. Or we could look at the smaller kph on
the
speedo for when you see the signs in kph and then look at the mph on
the
speedo for when the signs are in mph. This country can not get the
simplest
of things right most of the time, I can not imagine them changing all
the
road signs in the whole country and getting it right.

I think that they have the best policies in Holland they just blow them up!
We are all law abiding in this country are we not? It's just another form
of tax; Landcruisers will have a special high rate of tax just for them.
Still it is not the GATSO you need to worry about but rather those Camera
vans that just pop up miles from any were half a mile down the road by the
time you have focused on them it is too late.

If you haven't heard by now I wouldn't worry about it. Quite often, especially at roadworks on motorways, they will set a camera to go off exactly at 50mph (or whatever the limit is) just to slow people down. Since it would get everyone it would rapidly run out of film, so they don't bother to load it. Also the older cameras can simply run out of film, but continue to flash anyway.
I often got this going through the Avon Gorge roadworks section of the M5, and it got to the point where I played with it using the cruise control to preset my speed exactly to 51 mph before passing it, just for the fun of seeing the flash in the mirror.
On the subject of radar traps, detectors, speeding, etc I came across the following (in passing while searching for HID headlights): http://www.h-i-d.co.uk/info.shtml
Regarding Ireland: the last time I was there the speed limit signs seemed to vary randomly between mph and kph, I think the kph ones were smaller. So one sort of guessed, not that it seemed to matter much. Also the only map we could find of West Cork was based on a survey done in 1890 or so, and it bore remarkably little relationship to the actual roads - the only time in my life when I've really needed GPS!
It saddens me to see Ireland change so fast, but I suppose "the old order changeth, yielding place to new..." At least your diesel is cheaper than ours!

In my case it was set to go off at dead on 30mph

Well, some of us don't have cruise control.....! ( :-(

Thanks Chris! just the information I need!

Hi Christopher
I think you are right about the changes, too much too soon.
I know exactly what you mean about the roads, signs etc. I have lived here
all my life and will still get lost every time I go any where I do not go
regulary. I have got lost in Cork aswell, as for maps,ha.
I have travelled through France every year on holidays and do not get lost,
well sign posted at every exit and roundabouts, unlike this country where
you decide to go some where and hope you get there, if you follow the signs,
did I say signs, well there might be some for some of the way.
This is how to do it,look for your destination just to hope you will end up
there, then every little town ,village, shop on the way, thats where the
signs will give you direction to.
Mark off all these on your trip one by one, ask all the locals how to get
there and take no notice of them at all because they do not know what you
are talking about. They will tell you just around the next corner about a
mile and your there , the problem is the first corner is 3 miles down the
road and no turns in sight, you go on and on and then ask another local and
he tell you to turn back and take the second left, first right, and the last
turn on the right. You start thinking , I dont remember us passing two left
turns on our way to here, but you go along with it anyway because you do not
have a choice in the matter. You meet a sign look it up on your map and say
thats on the way, you come to a round about and guess what it has five exits
and absolutly no signs any where. I have been there and now they say they
are going to change all the signs to kph, in all honesty that shouldnt take
too long, they are all on the really good roads. I do not think that the
council men will even venture too far. In France its so easy to travel where
you want and not get lost.
