Started her up yesterday after she spent a few days outside in the wet. Terrible rattle from front of engine and it sounded like a broken cam belt tensioner but was very rhythmic so I thought I might spray WD 40 on the belts. That's what it was! They often squeak after standing but I've never heard a mechanical sounding sound before.

Curious Frank i was getting a very worrying rattle knocking sound while shutting down which i first put down to the exhaust knocking - but it was coming from up front of me ?

Seemed to cure itself before i ever worked out what it was but i've played with the belts a couple of times since i last heard it and i do use wd-40 to help them find a comfortable sit on pulleys

Not relevant on shut down (or perhaps at all), but I did replace the bearing (Roughtrax or 6301-2RSH from other sources) on the a/c belt tensioner. The old bearing hadn't collapsed, but was quite stiff and was noisy on start up (old grease hard until warm ?).
