New 80, rear diff change

Julian,
For doing the rear it helps to have a variation of the SST for the locknut
(I believe when I did it I managed with a screwdriver/drift but not
advised). some of the 80scool/ih8mud guys have fabricated their own - do a
search and see the photos . Doesn't look that hard just need the
measurements. Rears are much easier than fronts - just make sure u have all
the right parts, seals etc.
While u're at it do the rear brake pads need changing and rebledding?

Subject: [ELCO] New 80, New Problems :-((
Hi,
Just picked up a new 80 (see sig) from another list member who very
kindly got a friend of his (who runs a Porsche garage) to do a full
service replacing all the fluids and filters in the engine, auto box,
transfer case, diffs, etc a couple of weeks ago.
I picked the car up from Edinburgh on Saturday and then drove it the
400 odd miles back home and soon noticed noise/vibration coming from
the back end that appeared to increase the further I travelled.
On Sunday I had a chance to poke around, and it appears that during the
service they only put 2litres of oil in each diff when it should be 2.
6l in the front and 3.2l in the back.
I drained the rear diff oil and it is pretty black, so I get the
impression that the lack of oil in the diff has caused the seals to
overheat and fail resulting in bearing grease in the oil.
The rear is a lot quieter now that it has the correct amount of oil in
it, but am going to replace the bearings and oil seals because there is
still a fair amount of noise and vibration coming through particularly
from the left hand side (also at 123k miles it is still on the
originals).
Any pointers/gotchas to watch out for before pulling it all apart?

I usually get my bearings etc from Milner, =A375 + VAT per corner still
sounds very expensive.

Jon.

Hi Brendan,
Haynes doesn't mention it (factory manuals on order), but I have a reasonable
idea of the shape of it. Should be able to fabricate something.
Dealer was quoting ?245 inc VAT for one side, but local supplier is quoting
about ?75 + VAT per corner, which is a bit better.
Tempted, but am going to keep wrenching down to a minimum until I have the
workshop sorted and also another digital camera - I have lots of things
planned and hope to try to write most of them up.

Hi Julian,
Must be a small market or something then, I've only ever had fronts off
them but assumed they did the rears as well ...
Will be interested to hear how you get on as I've not tackled the rears
on mine.

Hi Jon,
They claim they don't do the rear bearing sets.
The kit I have ordered includes the inner and out bearings and also the
two oil seals as well as another seal.

I don't know about later models or grey imports but my UK spec '91 uses
the same wheel bearings front and rear.

Hi Toby,
That's interesting, according to my parts CDs the numbers are different
front and rear for mine.
It doesn't sound like they get replaced much because few people stock
them.
Apparently there is a firm in Bristol specialising in Hiluxes and also do
some LC parts that stock them, but that is about it - every one else
would have to get them in special order.
