Hallo out there,
I have just joined the list and whilst chatting to Julian recently, he
suggested that I should introduce myself.
I have just purchased a 1979 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, petrol, green, 3
geared import. I am based in Clapham, SW London. The car is to my knowledge
un-modified and in pretty good original condition. The bodywork will
probably need attention in a year or two, but it certainly a passable
exhibit.
The car was imported from Java, where the previous owner was living. He had
owned it for five years in total, two in Java, three in the UK. He imported
it and interestingly, avoided all import duties and VAT as he had owned it
for more than one year, a substantial saving.
I have a couple of questions, I am aware that the FJ40 was never imported to
the UK by Toyota, does anyone know roughly how many are actually in the UK
now?
Are heaters still available? Mine has a huge air con unit but no heater, I'm
not too fussed, but my wife has an interest in some semblance of basic
comfort.
Lastly, for now, is there a decent and reasonably priced after market power
steering unit, that you can buy for the FJ40, and if so who sells it?

You're almost certainly not alone. There was a guy advertising some in 4x4
magazine from New Zealand - they were HJ40's (diesel)and you see the odd one
advertised in the specialist press now and then. I bet not even Toyota or
the DVLA know the answer.

The USA is the best place, including the TLC owners club. Their forum is
Yahoo based and a little 'yahoo' in some of the postings, if you get my
drift, but there's a lot of 40 series people on it - they put big block
Chevys in them.

Again, I'd try the US of A. With a big block Chevy in the nose, it's certain
to need power steering!
Regarding parts, there was a guy in France allegedly starting GRP body panel
production. I'll rummage through my old emails and see if I can find the
message.
Tell us a bit more about yours - is it standard, or modified?
If ever there was an answer to the earlier posting here about the argument
of LR vs Toyota, yours is a good example....

wheelbase which was I believe a 55>
A long wheelbase is a 45. The 55 was another model. Wasn't Julian going to
do a Landcruiser 'thesaurus' with the models on? Or did he, it's just I
haven't looked

Dear Julian,
Might there be something that can be done with the list to make replies to
questions go elsewhere rather than as currently, where everything goes to
everyone.
I write this as my mine is an FJ40 and most of what is written doesn't
concern my LC. I understand that I might be a bit out of order, as virtually
everyone on the list has the same or similar LC and I don't!
I don't really want to leave the list, but I would prefer to not have to
delete up to 30 emails a day that don't really address the problems and
peculiarities of my LC.

you find the bit that is in arrows >>>
Highlight it and copy it to your "To:" box. then right the email

Oops, now look what I've started...Julian?
I empathize with Alan, hugs.
Might be good if there were to be a smart, simple rule or amendment to this
email system, oven a crude website that would allow all contributors to pass
on matters that could never be of interest to them?
Surely one of us could knock up an easy website fairly quickly?
