Hallo out there,
I have just joined the list and whilst chatting to Julian recently, he
suggested that I should introduce myself.
I have just purchased a 1979 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, petrol, green, 3
geared import. I am based in Clapham, SW London. The car is to my knowledge
un-modified and in pretty good original condition. The bodywork will
probably need attention in a year or two, but it certainly a passable
exhibit.
The car was imported from Java, where the previous owner was living. He had
owned it for five years in total, two in Java, three in the UK. He imported
it and interestingly, avoided all import duties and VAT as he had owned it
for more than one year, a substantial saving.
I have a couple of questions, I am aware that the FJ40 was never imported to
the UK by Toyota, does anyone know roughly how many are actually in the UK
now?
Are heaters still available? Mine has a huge air con unit but no heater, I'm
not too fussed, but my wife has an interest in some semblance of basic
comfort.
Lastly, for now, is there a decent and reasonably priced after market power
steering unit, that you can buy for the FJ40, and if so who sells it?
Another female request.
Regards,
Steve Ackhurst

<Should I assume that no-one out there knows the answers to my questions?>
Very difficult to answer, Steve. I'd guess that's the reason for the
deafening silence :)
<I will try just once more, I would really like know roughly how many FJ40's
are in the UK, surely I'm not the only owner? If no one knows, might anyone
know how I might find out?>
You're almost certainly not alone. There was a guy advertising some in 4x4
magazine from New Zealand - they were HJ40's (diesel)and you see the odd one
advertised in the specialist press now and then. I bet not even Toyota or
the DVLA know the answer.
<Most parts issues seem to be solvable using US parts specialists, heater
looks like being impossible with Toyota parts.>
The USA is the best place, including the TLC owners club. Their forum is
Yahoo based and a little 'yahoo' in some of the postings, if you get my
drift, but there's a lot of 40 series people on it - they put big block
Chevys in them.
<I would still like to know about fitting power steering if anyone has any
wise words or experience of such, please let me know.>
Again, I'd try the US of A. With a big block Chevy in the nose, it's certain
to need power steering!
Regarding parts, there was a guy in France allegedly starting GRP body panel
production. I'll rummage through my old emails and see if I can find the
message.
Tell us a bit more about yours - is it standard, or modified?
If ever there was an answer to the earlier posting here about the argument
of LR vs Toyota, yours is a good example....
Best regards
Neill Watson

<The 40 series cruisers are rare in this country.I remember seeing a long
wheelbase which was I believe a 55>
A long wheelbase is a 45. The 55 was another model. Wasn't Julian going to
do a Landcruiser 'thesaurus' with the models on? Or did he, it's just I
haven't looked:)
Cheers for now.

Dear Julian,
Might there be something that can be done with the list to make replies to
questions go elsewhere rather than as currently, where everything goes to
everyone.
I write this as my mine is an FJ40 and most of what is written doesn't
concern my LC. I understand that I might be a bit out of order, as virtually
everyone on the list has the same or similar LC and I don't!
I don't really want to leave the list, but I would prefer to not have to
delete up to 30 emails a day that don't really address the problems and
peculiarities of my LC.
Humbly yours,
Steve Ackhurst

When you see an email you want to reply to, scroll down the page until
you find the bit that is in arrows >>>
Highlight it and copy it to your "To:" box. then right the email
Should be okay

That's difficult to manage without separate lists unless you attempt to
filter at the receivers end. Some might prefer to see all threads not
just answers to their own question. I think you would be best with a
mail reader that can deal with threads then you don't need to expand
them and can just delete an entire thread.
Why not start or join an FJ40 specific list?
Ian.

OK I sympathise with Steve here, I have a KZJ70 and 99% of the list
traffic is J80 biased. In a previous life I subscribed to an MR2 list
where many people had the same problem, we adopted the convention where
if the message concerned things specific to the Mk1 MR2, the writer
prefixed the subject line with [MK1], similarly with [MK2] and [MK3], if
the subject was thought to be of interest to all, no prefix was added.
This makes it very simple to use the rules in almost any mail reader to
filter out unwanted postings.
I would suggest then that we could use [J40], [J60], [J70] and [J80] as
prefixes for the subject line in this list - then everyone still get all
posts but Steve (and I) can bin any posts that are marked as J80 specific.
I think if Steve created a UK J40 specific list, he'd be there himself,
I wouldn't be much better off if I started a J70 list. Anyway this list
was for all UK LC owners, not just J80s.

Oops, now look what I've started...Julian?
I empathize with Alan, hugs.
Might be good if there were to be a smart, simple rule or amendment to this
email system, oven a crude website that would allow all contributors to pass
on matters that could never be of interest to them?
Surely one of us could knock up an easy website fairly quickly?
Best, cheeky of Clapham,
