noise, serious ???

Hi Guys
Well where do I start.
I have been having a few persistent issues with the cruiser as you know and are probabily sick of lisening to.
Left it into Toyota yesterday again.
Wont be going back to them again only for parts.
The best they could come up with for the constant leaking CV was it needs new swivel seals 199.99 euro and 3 to 4 hours of labour.
They were supposed to do this twice already.
Anyway diff oil is coming out onto the ball so its an inner oil seal issue at least.
But not according to them.
I had them bleed the brakes as I thoufght they would do a better job than me because I could not fine the nipple over the rear axle.
But they messed up here too, the brakes are softer then before.
I asked about a noise I am getting at the front end but no feed back on that.
Anyway I have this inconsistant intermittant noise at the front left wheel area like a dull sound of metal off metal which can be felt on the brake pedal and steering.
It can be felt by the person in the passenger seat at the foot well.
Its like someone banging on the under side of the wheel arch with a hammer while you are driving.
I am going to take the wheel off tomorrow and have a look.
But what should I be looking for, any ideas.
What could be the worse case senario when driving.
Its just with Christmas soon I need to know if I should park it and hire a car untill I can get a guy after Christmas to look at it.
Just any ideas would be great.
thanks

Hey Jon
Thanks a million for that.
Its nice to get concise advice.
Is it possible that it could be a faulty suspension spring, how would I
check.
The shock seems fine.
Its funny you should say about the wheel coming off, I was thinking the
same. Like it did or nearly did with, ah I cant remember who it was now, not
so long ago
I know what you mean, I would love Julian to poke around the cruiser and fix
what mess others have made.
As I said I have given up on Toyota, I really dont think they know, which is
really sad.
See what bugs me is im very anal when it comes to the cruiser.
I had all new bearings (inner and outer) fitted, new discs, new rear
calipers, new pads, new CVs, new seals not long after each other.
Its all Milners stuff and the one guy who done every thing.
So I now need another guy to tell me whats what, be it the goods or the
workmanship to blame.
But your discription about things seems bang on so ill check tomorrow.
Interesting about the brake caliper cause thats what it feels like that its
moving and banging off the disc , well maybe. And the fact that a second
push on the pedal restores good breaking.
But this is what I would expect Toyota to pick up on after all thats what I
paid them for.
It s on the side of the extra dry ball not the over wet ball.
Any more possible causes please tell me so i can worry a bit more and know
what to look for.
cheers

Hi Jon
Went out to the shops this morning and turned back without getting there.
The steering felt like it was on ice, sudden jerks to the left and of course
the noise.
Had a look at the cruiser and like you said all I did was jack it up wiggle
the wheel.
I was amazed at how much the wheel jiggled.
It jiggled about an inch, the caliper moved with the wheel and I checked,
all the nuts are tight.
There is a distintive mark running on the outside of the disk about 1 inch
wide like a severe scraping had accured.
Is there anything can be done or would it not be adviseable to get new
bearings fitted.
Would the wheel snap off with this amount of play, I ask because it felt
this morning as though it could.
But then this is just pure speculation on my part.
cheers

Hi John,
I advise you not to drive the car for the time being.
Going back to Jon's question, is the loose wheel the one Toyota were working on?
If it is, get them to sort it out and lend you a car in the meantime.
If the caliper is moving with the whole knuckle assembly, you will need your knuckle bearings replaced and get the seals done at the same time.

Hey Julian
I wouldn't drive it the way it felt today not a hope.
Its the other side (the very dry side).
The disc is moving with the wheel between a half and 1 inch of movement.
They did work on it in Sept 06, when they replaced both sides bearings so it
is their fault but with it being over the year and the parts being Milner.
Im not going back, its time to move on.
With the bearings being so loose what parts are being put under strain.???
Should I repalce any bolts or nuts like the ones that stop the whole wheel
assembly from fallling off.
I have a set of seals thats no problem but I dont have the bearings, so
would it be wise to replace them too.
And I have to wait to source a new guy to work on it with it being the
holidays I reakon it could be mid January.
cheers

Hi John,
Do you recall what work they did last year?
I am wondering if they failed to put any grease in the knuckle last time. I have seen this more than once - most modern cars have sealed pre greased bearings so the concept of getting hands dirty putting proper grease into the knuckle and on the wheel bearings is quite foreign to many modern mechanics.
Take the wheel off and you will find a square headed plug at the top of the knuckle facing forward - remove the plug and use a long screwdriver, piece of wire or wire coat hanger to push into the knuckle and wiggle it around to see if there is any grease in there.
If there isn't take it back to Toyota and demand that they sort it out at their expense. It is irrelevant where the parts came from, if they did the job they should have done it properly.
As with the injection problems, you need to get tough with the suppliers to get them to resolve it rather than suffer and try to find a new supplier to resolve an old problem.
Do you have Trading Standards over there - if you do talk to them. Also consider talking to Toyota IE to complain about the dealer and ask for their help - remind them that it isn't doing their brand any favours.
You should push for at least a complete axle rebuild with new seals, bearings, CVs, disks etc - the garage will most likely claim from their insurance so it won't cost them much.
John, make your New Years resolution for 2008 to be more bullish about sorting your car out - don't accept second rate service :)
