Does the 2f Engine need a non return valve as it looks like my carb drains of fuel and is a pig to start after a day or two?
Once started or warm its fine

I have a 1971 FJ40 with an "F" engine. It doesn't have the valve of which you speak. I'm not a very good mechanic, but I would think that rather than a non return valve, you have a pressure relief valve. That would allow over pressurized fuel to return to the tank. I think that replacing this valve, and the fuel filter would be a good place to start. Cheap too.
My F engine had pretty much the same problem plus it had low power from a stop. I assumed it was the distributor, so I replaced that with a DUI. When that didn't help, I tried a new Rochester Carburetor. No luck. Lastly I tried an electric fuel pump. Bingo!! The old was a new mechanical pump, but it didn't have enough pressure.
I also wired the new pump through an unlabeled toggle switch on the dash. A nice anti theft device. The Cruiser won't go if this switch is off.
