The part of Mali you are planning to go is pretty safe. It's Kidal and
further up north towards Taoudenni that's a bit shifty now.
As it happens, the track I recorded during my last trip covers in
detail the complete route down to Mopti. From Mopti it's an easy hop
up north to Timbuctou (about 300 km), then another 60 km to Essakane.
