North Africa - Timbouctou music festival

Would like to go to the festival one day, January 2007 would probably have
been it but we have just had our first child! The plan was to go to a
friends wedding in Kenya, after the wedding they have invited people to join
them at the music festival, now I don't know if we can manage the wedding
let alone a festival at Timbouctou, overland driving seems a long way
off......

Guys
Any one up for trip to Timbouctou (Mali)in January 2007?
there's a music festival there and there is interest in going; a couple of
my pals; an artist and a musician. I might even be lucky to get
sponsorship this time...
cheers

Hi Malcolm,
Thinking forward to trying to get out to Morocco next spring with a youngish
baby I did see a really cool Recaro baby seat the other day with a good 5 point
harness - reminds me of my rally days although I wasn't in a baby seat then!

Renate,
Nice of you to give me the chance of dreaming about such a trip for the next
few months as I get used to being a father! I regret to say it's unlikely
my wife would agree to the trip, the FJ45 is a pickup which will hopefully
be good for two and a child but not very comfortable for such a long trip,
also the vehicle is still "in work".
If I were to do such a trip I would want to get used Land Cruiser (a SWB 70
like everyone wants!) and prepare it (just to ensure reliability - nothing
fancy). I will have to put a lot of miles on the FJ45 before I will trust
it on long trips even in the UK, on the other hand I will know it very well!
I appreciated your cost breakdown and be interested in a rough idea of the
full costs if you do the trip - money sometimes doesn't go far when
travelling but your trip looks good value to me.

Hey Malc
Apparently there are two festivals a year, one in January and one several
months later.
However, there might be a chance to do this with you in January, I'll keep
all you posted as the thing develops between now and say, November, for
last orders, as it were, as we can add another to the convoy, no problem
here.
The idea is that we have at least three landcruisers, equipped basically,
as we don't need bells and whistles, common sense and good drivers who
know their vehicles are the most important prerequisites.
See yah!
Renate
