observation of fine-balanced tuning for towing (chat)

Sorry Ranate, I have to jump in here, if you saw a car/trailer rig that
"looked good, was efficient AND effective" then I will guarantee that
the tailer had a nose weight of about 50 to 75kg. If a trailer
noseweight is significantly lighter than 50kg or so, the trailer is very
difficult to control (swaying and badly affected by crosswinds) if it's
much heavier than that the car starts to get that "hang ass" look and
the car handling (and more importantly braking) are adversely affected.
Sorry I had to jump in, but if you are ever going to tow a trailer,
please set the nose weight correctly.
Alan
P.S. This really only applies to "proper trailers", e.g horse boxes,
caravans, car transporters etc. Not the silly little wheelbarrow things
you get from Halfords - I'm not sure if the whole trailer weighs 75kg!

Sorry again Renate, but for the sake of safety (yours!) I had to reply
when you disagreed with Rob, when he was absolutely correct.
And I will continue to jump in, when safety is concerned.
And it was not at all obvious from your post that you were not ignorant
of weight ratios, much the opposite. It seemed to indicate that you felt
a balanced trailer was best.

OK, lets calm things down.
As far as I understand it Renate is referring to the LC + Horsebox
setup looking well balanced which is different to what Rob and Alan are
talking about - the actual balance of the trailer.
I don't see any problems with people jumping in to stress safety
issues, but probably best to clarify things before we start a flame
war.

Hi Julian, Renate, and Alan.
I didn't mean to start an argument. It was only a comment on what could
be
Construed from Renate post. I have the utmost respect for Renate.
Reading her posts she is an accomplished TLC owner/adventurer. I posted
a link at the bottom of me original post. This is from a highly regarded
firm who are in the business of trailer design, and build. Who have more
knowledge of trailer dynamics than I do, but to back up my own
experiences of problem with incorrectly loaded trailers. Following a
trailer with a broken down Transit on the back "snake" across the road
when reaching 40 MPH, was not pleasant! And who helped load that
trailer?? Your truly!!
Best Regards to All
Rob

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I think Renate simply meant that the vehicle and trailer looked correct. I think the term 'balanced meant 'in harmony' or 'right'. Not balanced as in the same weight on the front as the back.
Even with 50kg (which is less than half my weight!!) on the tow hitch and with the tow hitch at the proper height a vehicle and trailer look level/balanced/correct.
(Or I've not read any of these e-mails properly and I'm babbling on about something else!!)
Now come on. Lets start talking about how to make bread, or what mpg we all get, or propane injection for diesels (if I has plenty of money...)
Good night.
