off again, those dammed brakes

Hi Guys
Im back, im like a bad penny always turning up to see if any of you can suss
out what the hell is up with my brakes. I know its difficult diagnosing a
problem from a computer screen, but you do.
History
A while back I had a problem with my brakes which I thought I had resolved.
(First problem) I noticed, pedal was a little jumpy when pressed.
(Second problem) The rear caliper seized while off roading and I lost the
pads, result, severe loss of pedal power and a scretching sound.
Had Toyota fit new pads, problem still there, soft brakes and the
scretching.
Had them replace something else, problem still there.
Pedal jumping was possibly due to a warped disk.
I replaced the four discs and the two rear calipers from Milners.
I replaced the pads on the four hubs with Toy genuine pads.
I put new wheel bearings inner and outer on all four hubs.
I had the brakes bled three times.
I replaced the handbrake shoes/springs and adjusted it.
Of course I had this work done for me so I presume all the bits were put on
etc.
My problem of the jumping pedal is back, not as bad as before but with all
the new bits added it should not be coming back at all.
I can also hear a scretch from the rear wheel when I start to move off and
while driving.
Its like the sound of a gate with rusty hindges when opened.
Any ideas what the hell is going on would be great.
cheers

Can you define "jumping" a bit more precisely? Fast, slow. Any speed
or just before stopping.
Do you have ABS? I've a feeling from memory that you don't, but if you
do:
One symptom of a failed sensor, or too much dirt between sensor and
toothed wheel, is a rapid vibration of the brake pedal just before you
come to a halt as the ABS cuts in. The test for this, assuming you have
ABS, is to pull out the fuse and see if the symptoms still occur. If
that stops it in then you have identified the problem. This is
reasonably common on these vehicles: I've had it, so has Joaquim, and
also some US members of 80s-cool.
If it is more of a pulsing, occurring over a range of speeds, then it
points to mechanical problems. Given that you've replaced all the brake
bits it *could* be a worn shock absorber I suppose - get someone to
follow you looking for wheel bounce when you brake.
As for the screeching noise - my guess would be something in the drum
handbrake assembly. Does yanking the handbrake on a bit make any
difference to the sound?
I suppose another possibility is a leprechaun stuck underneath from the
bog-crawling ;-)
Any other ideas anyone?

John,
I had a similar thing when I got my cruiser. I suspected a warped
front disc, so I replaced them. It was, of course, a rear disc. I
replaced the rear discs and the problem went away. Three weeks later
it was back. If it is a warped disc again it can stay there. I have
had all of the shocks replaced.

Hi Christopher
Ah you got the word I was looking for in one. The brake pedal pulses when I
apply the brakes, the slower the speed the more I can feel the pedal
pulsating.
Its just I cant believe its back after changing all the bits that i did.
I dont have ABS so no sensors involved.
The shocks and springs are only two years old if that with less than 25,000
on them.
I was wondering if a disk could be warped in such a short a time.
I have read stories about keeping the brakes depressed after coming to a
stop causes hot spots.
But I suppose it is possible there's a whole army of those little
leprechauns constantly messing with the cruiser.
I have't tried moving with the handbrake on a little but will tomorrow and
see.

Hi Clive
Sorry to hear you had the Gremlins aswell but why would you think the warped
disc could come back so soon with your cruiser.
Im asking because when i was replacing the discs I went for the cheap option
(Milners at ?80 each) instead of my gut feeling to get the drilled slotted
DBA discs which are more expensive. But With all the crap I have to put up
with with the cruiser I do buy cheaper and then wonder if I did right. Im
just trying to think of a reason why this annoying pulsating pedal is back
again.
A bit more memory is coming back and I remember that one of the front discs
sometimes would kind of not exactly grind to a stop. But would make a noise
and feeling like when you pulled your push bike brakes and they shuttered to
a stop, but with out the shutter.
I also noticed a lot of dust from the new brake pads on the front two wheels
only after the last change of pads.
I never had that before, I wonder if the front brakes are working harder
than they should.

John,
Is it just the brake pedal pulsating or it's the whole car being a bit
jerky when stopping? Is the gearbox manual or auto?

Hi Roman
Its just the brake pedal pulsating, the rest of the cruiser is fine.
Its an Auto.

Hi John,
Bearing in mind everything else that has been said, here are some other
options:
Check out the vacuumm hoses going to the servo - you may have a split
in one of those that only leaks when the vacuum gets to a particular
pressure level - at the end of the day you may be better off just
replacing all the vacuum hoses.
Check in your manual and you should be able to find where the hoses
run, take one off measure it's diameter and then get a couple of metres
worth from your local car shop.
The other thing to check is your master cylinder - again there could be
a leak in the seals that only leaks when the pressure goes beyond a
certain level, so when you put your foot on the brake the pressure
builds, a seal leaks, the pressure drops due to the leak and then the
leak seals, but you still have your foot pushing on the pedal so the
pressure is building up again and the cycle starts over again - causing
the pulsing.
As for the screaching noise, jack your car up and take off the wheel on
the side that is screaching, probably also put the car in neutral and
then rotate the hub by hand and see if you can pin point the source of
the screech.
It could well be something like the disk guard at the back of the disk
rubbing in one place or something trivial like that.

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned about bogging. If you did any
mud driving after installing the new brakes, it could be that there are
some pebbles in the rear drums causing (I believe your cruiser has
drums for the handbrake?)

JB,
Strange pulsating problem that one, it seems like classic disc warp,
but apparently not with you this time.
Just try one other thing, which happened on my 80. I noticed a
similar feeling especially when I was driving slowly such as at
junction approaches and in slow moving traffic queues. The problem
was parting of the steel belts in one rear tyre. I had had a screw
puncture it some 3000 miles earlier and thought no more after repair.
But the damage had been done and it eventually manifested itself as
a 'bleb' on the tread surface when the air got past the belting to
the layer of rubber underneath the tread.
This will be best checked by removing the wheels for close
inspection, its not so easy to rotate a wheel when jacked up and at
the same time feel the surface. HTH.
Cheers
