Off road tyres, steel wheels , bigger tyres

In my experience if you had lift (2") than you don't need to have
anything else done to the vehicle. When I had new shocks fitted I also
had new coils at the same time, so giving me about 2.5" on my 31 10 15"
tyres, nor does it change the gear ratios - it might effect your speedo
a little bit, mind, something about differing tyre speeds but I'm no
techno with stuff like this. I know that the faster I go the more the
errror range between read speed and actual speed (as my GPS indicated)

Hi Guys
Its been a while since I gave any one any headaches on the list by
asking
questions so I think I have a few. But first to let you all know the
leaking CV inner seal is fixed and I did it all on my own, of course I
did
NOT. Our new member Mik in Mayo was so kind to do it and I helped by
watching cleaning and learning. He made it look so easy and once you
see it
being done it changes the whole idea of not being able to even think
about
doing it. Do any of you guys know of a good 4x4 guy in wales or close
for
steel rims and tyres, I am thinking of getting the cruiser ready for
off
road because there seems to be some activity every now and again over
here.
If I go to a larger tyre say a 31 10 15 will it change the ratio of the
gear
changes in the auto box at all. I am also thinking of a set of new
springs
like OME which should give a 2inch lift and stableise the ride more,
but if
I do that is there any thing that has to be made longer underneath the
body
like wires or pipes etc. While I was out this morning bugging the poor
guy
in the motor factors he showed me a pump for changing the oil from the
dip
stick. I know you probably know about this already but it was new to me
to
think that you could change the oil from the dip stick. When changing
the
fluid in the auto box where do you fill from ,is it the dip stick. How
do
you change all the fluid , is it drain then fill then drain again and
so on.
Up to this it has always gone into Toyota but I feel some confidence
coming
from some where, it must be those tablets I had this morning.
Thanks Guys

Thanks Renate
I know someone talked about this before on here, maybe they can remember I
can't.

Hi John,
A 2.5 inch lift should be fine by itself, although some say that you
should also replace the steering stabiliser and also get the caster
correction kit. You shouldn't need to extend anything, although do
extend your breathers if you are going to do more stuff off road.
You can find out more about that at:
http://www.lcool.org/technical/80_series/breathers.html
For an idea about the springs and shocks take a look at:
http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/products_suspension_main.htm
Moving to bigger tyres will affect your speedo reading. To get an idea
of the variation, take a look at:

Thanks Julian
I knew someone would know the whole lot. The addiction is getting stronger
and Mik has told me it only gets worse once I have gone off road , wont that
be terrible .

Well, once my current crisis is over I plan to take a couple of months
off work to dedicate to building up the site, packing it with FAQ's etc
which should give you plenty of research material.

I run steel wheels for my Simex when offroading.
However all the 4x4 dudes over here (USA) I've meet run the alu/factory
wheels and not seen anyone have issues. They ust be stronger than they look.
I've bent my wheels a few times and require a BFH to reseal where air was
coming out after a nasty trail with lots of rocks. The two other 80s didn't
have any issues with their std wheels.
So u don't need steel wheels however trying to get a set of wheels for a
seperate offroad set of tires (if thats what u're going to do) may be harder
to find anyway (in that they are hard to find in junkyard) so steel wheels
may be u're only option.
Foe the OME 2" lift u should be fine and not need any extra bits. My springs
gave me a 2.5-4" lift for awhile and I ran my 34" Simex for quite awhile
without any other mods (did change the shocks). Eventually got around to
extending the breathers and brake lines but didn't have an issue with them.
No steering issue or vibration either (well not totally true as my
road-tires are knackered now but that was due to mis-alignment that I've
only got fixed now (9 years later :)). I have replaced several u-joints
mainly on my rear prop-shaft but too lazy to go check if it needs balancing
:)

How is it going Lal
Thanks for the info, so it seems to be good to but bigger tyres and a 2 inch
lift. This sounds good now all I have to do is try to understand all the
numbers on the OME coils and what they do or dont do and ill be fine and of
course extent the breathers on the diffs. Is there any thing that I should
think about guarding on the underneath. Are you planning on coming back to
the sod and if so are you going to bring the cruiser with you. So now I have
to learn more about the wheels and tyres which are crap and which are good
and of course those coils that should be fun.

John,
coming back - just don't know when and wheither we'll park in IRL or hop
back to Scotland/Uk undecided.
The good woman would be happy if it was tomorrow but I'd prefer another year
or two.
Will be bringing back a cruiser just not sure if I'll bring this one. Only
reason not to is the "cleaning-up-the-rust" issue and maybe better to find
another 96/97 thats rust free and waxoil the hell out of it b4 coming over.
Will have to run LPG (but can move that from current truck) as otherwise
will get killed on petrol prices back over. Would consider a diesel but
unobtainable over here.
I'm not up on the OME numbers either but plenty of info online in
80scool/lcool and ih8mud forums. U don't even have to do the breather extn
now but its an easy one to do (even 4 u :)
