Oil change

Hi,
So what's with the transmission oil in an auto. When you change
the oil you only change 6 litres but when you fill from new the
capacity is 14 litres. This means that you never really change the
oil, also you could be mixing oil types. Anyone ever looked in to
this?
Regards, Clive.

Clive,
It's ATF Dexron II.
14 litres? Where did you get it from?

Hi Clive,
When you drain the oil and replace you never normally succeed in
getting all the oil out of the cooler and the pipes to it.
Many people just work on the basis of regularly draining a bit and then
replacing it.
As for mixing the oils, the usual precautionary advice is to avoid it,
but I am sure that stacks of people have unwittingly done it without
any adverse affects.
Ideally you need to flush it through where you crack open the return
line from the oil cooler and run one end into a collection drum and the
other into a clean new oil supply drum (you need about 1.5-2 x total
capacity).
You then start the engine and cycle through the gears - this will flush
out all the old oil and crud, but you do waste a bit, but many consider
it to be worth it. If you search the 80s list archives you should be
able to find more info on the 'two bucket' method.

Hi,
After some "toy"ing around in deep water (water up to the front
window) last weekend I think it is wise to replace my oils. They were
almost due anyway.
As it is a long walk to the car parts shop I'd like to know beforehand
how much oil I will need for:
- engine: 7 liters I think?
- differentials front and rear: ?
- transmission: ?
The engine is a 1HZ (6cyl, diesel, no turbo) in a heavy-duty 75.
Next up my todo list is reread the topic on breather hoses for the
diffs I guess :)
Any advices on what workshop manual to buy and where to source it are
appreciated too.
Cheers,
Frederik

Hi Frederik,
Taken from a Haynes Manual covering 60-80s
unless post 1990 model then front is 2.8litres without diff lock and
2.6litres with.
car?
Try your local dealer for the factory manuals, although these are few
and far between. Failing that get a copy of the Haynes manual from
Amazon or Haynes directly.

Don't know any type numbers. It's an HZJ75 from 1993
I looked at the haynes manual before, but I though it didn't cover the
75 series with the 1hz engine? I could be mistaken though, if it does
I'm going to order one (am very happy with haynes for other marques)
Thanks for the research Julian!
Cheers,
Fred

Fred,
Haynes manuals are somewhat lacking, try an Ellery one E. P. T018 is the
cruiser 90 to 02 and it does your engine.

Appreciate your efforts!

Hi Frederik,
OK, that should be 4.6litres in the gearbox.
Don't forget the transfer case at 2.2 litres.
With the diffs, gearbox and transfer case, whilst it will make sense to
buy the different oils in bulk you are better off just sticking to the
1 litre bottles with the short fill tubes on them - if you have 5litre
containers you then need a pump or syringe to be able to suck the oil
out of the container and then squirt into the fill holes.
