Hello, I live in New Zealand and just joined the Landcruiser club. Thanks to those who helped with my center diff actuator. I have ordered one from Chapelgate. Its got colder here now as we are going into winter. Will be expecting sub zero overnight temperatures and single digit highs for the daytime in the coming months. 15/40 is often recommended for use here but seems a bit thick for winter use to me. I am planning to do a bit of hunnting soon and will be traveling to areas that get down to minus 10 c in the mornings. What oil grades do you guys use? Engine is 1hd t with 278k on it. Is the likes of 5w40 too thin? Thanks.

I use 15/40 all the time

15-40 fully synthetic CI-4/SL oil grade, good for 10,000km in this hot coastal climate.

260,000 miles.

Lowest temp I have seen is IIRC -8°C, I use Repsol semi synthetic 10/40, and change it at rediculously low mileages, but it is super clean, no problems in 8 years in my hands.

10/30 was the original spec I think for the 1hdt?

Regards

Dave

Hi Dervis Lidl are selling full syn 5w-40 5 litres for €17.99 and €1 cheaper for semi syn . I brought 12 litres 3 x 4 litres over from the UK as I got them cheap £12 per 4 litres , but I bought 6 x 5 litres of 5w- 40 fully syn here from Lidl and I plan on mixing it 50- 50 so I will end up with 5w 35 as so I use it up , the usual price for full syn 5w 30 or 5w - 40 fully syn oil here is between €47 to €52 for 5 litres in most DIY places, whats the price where you are . Lidl had this sale on 5 weeks ago but still have plenty left in the one I go in on Dhekelia road near Larnaca town . In my toyota hand book for the lc120 d4d they recommend 5w-30 for all climates . I change my oil every 6 months irrespective of how many miles I did and in the UK it was about just 2k as I was always working and the car parked up but I can't bare to so see the oil go black I have to have it clear . Also since I put in a EGR blanking plate , oil catch can and vented to air via a filter the oil stays clean as soot from the EGR valve does no longer go back in the Engine .

Tony the important factors is not always price. Firstly here in Cyprus being a Mediterranean climate Toyota recommends different oil variable e.g 15-40 for mine. This as I'm told is because the sea and heat aids to moister in the air and therefore deteriorates the oil sooner hence here we service more often than a colder climate like the uk.

Second factor is the quality of oil not just semi or full synthetic, more so the specific quality grade thats certified. When I result my 1HDT engine I used a lower grade semi but now after 30,000km moved to 5-40 fully synthetic CI-4/SL oil grade good for 10,000km rather than the 6,000 prior.

Secondly price I get it for isn't too bad being discounted but that depends on how much your engine needs. Over all I think its worth a trip to Nicosia North to better see for yourself.

I will have to come over some time soon . I get great satisfaction changing the oil and filter in my truck especially as its so easy to do and no jacking up and oil filter on top side of engine with its own drain tube so no mess . The car I had previous was very low to the ground and oil filter was in a stupid place upside down so was a messy job .

Get in touch Tony and pop over to visit that way you'll see and learn so much more

Tony I'll be over in the UK visiting for a couple of weeks. If you know how to use google maps on a smart phone can send you the location nearer the time. Alternatively you can park up at the border and I'll pick you up and bring you back thus giving you a chance to visit on your first occasion.

Thanks

Hi Dervis that sounds like a great idea , It will also great to see your great looking motor .
Thanks.

I use castrol 5w30 c3 Fully synthetic all year round in my 1HD-FTE 100 series
Wise man , for peace of mind its better to use the superior product which does not coke up in your engine and takes high temps better as well as less wear in your engine plus can take more miles before a oil change , I have been using fully syn oil since the late 1980s when I first noticed mobil 1 , also if you shop around you can get fully syn oil same price as semi syn , I always bulk buy when its at a good price , I also use fully syn oils in the diffs , transfer box ,and fully syn ws Atf fluid .

I buy in bulk as well 20L barrel:)
Best way to buy it I remember in around 2007 Costco were selling 20 lt 5w-40 fully syn for £20 a drum so I got 3 drums and I already had more than half a drum left in my garage that I paid 50 something pounds for , I cant resist a bargain . I bought 30 toyota oil filters 10 in each box for my 120 when burrows toyota were selling them for £6.45 each . As I plan on keeping my truck for a very long time and I change the oil every six months .

Given the extra miles that people propose to do on fully synthetic oil, you should remember the oil fiter did not get any bigger when filling up.

Your right there Dave but for me that's not the case I do very little mileage .

I only do about 2000 per year, very few miles too, mine is a hobby not a necessity.
Same with me in the UK . Now I am in Cyprus I think it will be about 6000 a year, But the roads here are in a much better condition , no pot holes here but too many speed bumps when going through villages . Motorways are very quiet most of the times and sometimes empty , which is a breath of fresh air compared to the UK , and the scenery when driving is great too . And many alternative off road routes to and from villagers that farmers use , Cyprus is 4x4 lovers paradise , many wild 4x4s that would be illegal in the UK , police here are very laid back , nearly every family seems to have at least one 4x4 in the household . I saw a matt black Hummer the other day in Larnaca where I live it had massive off road tyres sticking way out of the wheel arches and no number plates and blacked out windows including the front windscreen , I have all my windows blacked out to keep the truck cool but not the front windscreen .

Oh, don't get me on the subject of pot holes, I'm just having a rant about MOT'S on another thread.
All the worlds problems boil down to 'over population' to many people = to many cars = to many pot holes.

And to many councils whining about 'not enough money' in the pot, yet they pay the so called Exucitves a fortune and big bounses.

After reading you post I'm jealous, sounds like a fantastic way of life.
Thanks for your post it is a fantastic life here , its so laid back here , the weather is fantastic and you never have to worry about having rust problems . but you have make sure you wax your cars well here to protect from uv sunlight because there is plenty of it , But to someone who loves their cars like people on this site it adds to the pleasure . My wife and I worked hard all our lives in the UK and as soon as our kids got their own houses and got married its our time now we always planned on retiring in Cyprus and enjoy life before we got old , In the UK my wife never bothered wanting to drive the LC but here she is eager to drive it . My mother lives here on the island and she is 87 years old and she drives a top of the range Mits L200 Auto which she bought new in 2007 now would you see that in the UK but here its quite normal here , Oh they love there motorbikes here as well plenty big bikes here but very few people wear helmets maybe its too hot or they don't want to ruin their hairstyles . Another thing about Cyprus it seems to have more foreigners than locals its full of Brits and Russians and they seem to get on well with each other despite what the media in the UK and Russia say about each nation .

Is there still a problem with Turkish and Greek sides?
In 1974 a nazi group called the Eoka b with the help of fascist junta who ruled Greece at the time overthrow the government of Cyprus , the nazis started killing left wing Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots , that led to a civil war my family were targeted by the nazis because we were well known left wing socialists , Turkey invaded as a guarantor to restore peace and reinstate the legal government supposedly , but had ideas of her own and forced the Greek Cypriots to run for their lives out of the north of the island and leave behind everything behind thinking they would be able to return in a few days when law and order was reinstated , but it was not to be , Turkey sent in 100,ooo settlers to take over the homes and land of the Greek Cypriots that fled , thousands were killed who did not get out quick enough also Turkish Cypriots fled to the north of the island for protection of the Turkish army . The Turkish occupying army are still there in the north of the island and Famagusta a main town is a ghost town the Turkish army will not let anyone go back to their homes in Famagusta , and the Cypriots both Greek and Turkish are trying to do a deal to reunify the island they are not trying hard enough in my opinion , but there is no more fighting as the nazis are almost extinct thank god . Dervis and I are both Cypriots , Dervis is classed as a Turkish Cypriot and I a Greek Cypriot by some . but to me we are just Cypriots the Greek and Turkish bit should be abandoned it has done us no favors and divided our island .
I hope our people can over come this mother land crap and reunite the island sometime very soon . I hope I have not bored you with the history lesson of Cyprus . With Cyprus now a member of the EU there is no chance of a military coup ever happening again thank god .

No, not boring whatsoever, interesting, yes, I'm 63 now so I'm aware of the problems in Cyprus as I was growing up, but did not take much interest when I was younger, glad to hear things have settled down now, is there still much of a British military presence.
Yes they have 4 bases here 1 RAF and 1 Brit Army base in Limassol and 1 RAF in the Troodos mountains and 1 British Army base in Larnaca . Because of the British past we drive on the same side as the UK and all signs on roads and streets and shops are in English I think that's why a lot of English people live here as its easy for them to fit in as every one also speaks English also , where in Spain and France and Greece ect you need to learn their language to get by .
