Dirk, the combination of of a short propshaft and a 90mm lift has resulted in your propshaft yokes / bearings being put through too steep an angle - hence the bearings are grumbling. You answered it yourself really when you mentioned the noise stopped when laden.
Either get the ride height down, six bags of cement are not an option ! or - get a "double - jointed " propshaft. One end has an exta yoke in it that allows for more articulation. Very popular in the USA rock crawling circles. Source in the USA or find a firm over here that makes custom propshafts.

Just to add to Gareth's comments, if you check out the back of any of
the off roading mags like Total Off Road, you should see adverts for
companies that would be willing to make up a custom propshaft, although
as Gareth points out you will probably find sorting out the suspension
lift a cheaper option.

Thanks guys, also believe it's the acute angle with the big lift causing the
problem. I'll get in touch with the supplier first before exploring the
option to replace the propshaft.

Taking about double jointed propshafts, has anyone actually tried it
in real life conditions - I don't mean the rock crawling scene!
My impression is they must be a pain to maintain and add extra
play/instability to the drive train.

I was lookin g at a snow truck in Iceland, built on a nissan 4x4,
that had this on the rear end of the front prop. The guy used it on
road in the summer and said it made little, if any, difference to the
feel of the vehicle.

Hi Roman,
The front driveshaft on all live axle hiluxs has a CV joint type double
UJ at the transfer case end. Between the two UJ's is a spherical ball to
keep them lined up but still allow large changes in angle. In the USA I
think some companies are using a actual halfshaft type CV joint. As far
as maintenance just two extra grease nipples and no more play.
