So if your not an expert after ten years how long do you have to wait
to get your diploma. The other thing that I would like to know seeing as
I have you talting now is ( ARE YOU READY.)
The people how are they generally.
Very nice, very kind, and very good at looking after you (they also
like taking l'beast for a spin and have a habit of clambering all over
it)
what should one not do,
piss off authorities or forget to get the relevant (& all important
paperwork)
Where should one not go,
No place is out of limits, its just that one has to take guides if the
national parks are wanted to be visited, and have to take care in
"no-mans land" (the border areas/strips between Algeria and Libya)
constantly changing
What is the food like,
Very good, and I cook myself (tagines, cous cous, kinda things), food
is cheap and good, although scarce at times...
What about dieseses,
There are none! just the odd loose motions on occasions with the change
of climate, water and food. No pathogens survive in the heat anyway,
and if you are injured, you clean it up and leave it UNCOVERED as the
sun dries it up and out (sterilises it!) with 36 hours
What about the water,
Good, very potent, although in some places its potency is being
affected by gigantic water projects in the north (Libya, this is) that
takes it all from artesian wells that have survived for thousands of
years but are now being poisoned by salt
Do you need jabs first,
No, no jabs
whats the availability of machanics and parts,
mechanis are very good although they only speak French and Arabic....a
problem if something might go pearshaped. so advisable to take all
relevant or essential spares like hoses, v-belts, bushes, fluids (brake,
clutch, power steering, oil, oil filter, fuel filter if one is
finicky...(you don't actually need to take a fuel filter), GPS & comms
devices like Sat phones (hiring one of each between a group is very,
very reasonable price-wise)
what about the quality of the diesel,
diesel is excellent, bot the Libyan and Algeria stuff is excellent and
requires hardly any processing, so its about 3-7 dirhams (3 - 7 pence)
for a litre in libya and about 20-22 (20-22 pence) dirhams in algeria
what about all the insects ,spiders, snakes, mosies,
No mozzies except in oases like Ghat and Al Khufra (Libya) and oases in
Algeria. insects - beetles, spiders, snakes - horned vipers, asps, and
scorpions (2 kinds the mega-clawed variety and the megas-tailed variety
- avoid the mega-tailed varieties like the plague...)
what are the cops like,
There arn't any! (no speed cameras either....) just "military"
officals, police and border/checkpoint officials - not generally a
problem if paperwork is in order
is it generally safe in north Africa,
Yes!
are there any good places to go,
Yes! rock art, tassili national park (algeria), tamanrasset, ilizi etc,
tadrart-akakus national park (libya), ubari oasis), Murzuq, roman
prehistory (superbly surviving), Bengazi, Tobruck, etc
any WW11 sites of interest, museums etc,
Yes, loads of museums, Gardhes, Ghat, Tripoli, I haven't visited any
museums as such in algeria.
quite a few WW2 sites, ruined airplanes, trucks that are very old, dead
landrovers, dead cruisers....
Bascially tell me what you know the good and bad bits.
as usual I have questions which seem to come one after the other and I
have to slap myself to stop.
thanks if you are mad enough to answer these. You really should do some
work now its alright for me im at home still out of work with this
crappy back of mine.
Ask away! anything you wanna know if I have the answer I can provide
it.
No, I'm not in a working mood - pig-sick is what I am, so my mind is
wandering (as it does at times like this) to far better places than
this! than the cold Uk, then the crappy coy I work for etc., etc.
I'm thinking of diving again, and overlanding through Africa.

Fair game, all you need is a lrft as basic mods (snorkel too if
anticipiting overlanding through Africa generally), the rest comes later
if the trips become suitably frequent. If your vehicle is well
maintained and you keep fluids, lubricants, consumables etc in kits, and
you have the basic tools and mechanical bits, including rescue
equipment, again, basic, then the world is your oyster.
You don't actually need extra mods (like lights) unless anticipating
night driving in the desert or whatever for instance.
Its the only environment that I'm really happy in, and comfortable
with, I'm not an expert, obviously, as I've only been doing this for
about 10 years.

Maybe some day I will venture further than france and all that lovely
wine, but not for a good while as the two sons would not be too keen on
long driving and hot hot temps. And any way with all the mods I would
have to do to this cruiser I would be broke again. If it keeps going I
will be happy enough.

John
I don't have a trailer (impracticle anyway in the desert)
Accomodation - hotels (some are very good), campsites and 'wild
camping' (in the sand with tent, sleeping bag kinda thing) especially in
the deep desert 'cos yer driving solidly for hours at a time, and its
takes days to get anywhere.
Re children - there are very rare occasions were people and vehicles
are taken, but its very rare indeed for these things to happen.
Re white skinned children - this is more of a problem in the
sub-sahara/sahel region which borders on areas that are rife with crime,
slavery and such, and the further south you go the more unsafe its
becomes because you are then bordering on central africa. Libya, Egypt,
North Sudan, Algeria and Chad are safe as they can be. The only problem
with Chad is that the border between Chad and Libya are mined, as are
some areas between Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan.
People trafficking happens in areas south of where I go, same with
vehicle hijacks, also areas south of where I go.
I've had no problems in any of the places I visit, and, inspite of what
the FCO say on occasions, its safe providing you follow the rules. So
I'm not one that goes and breaks fundamental rules, for obvious reasons
as I don't want to be stopped from travelling in North Africa. This bit
is to do with self preservation and a bit of selfishness on my part - I
don't want to break the rules as I'd be banned from travelling, so I
follow the rules to the letter, and anyway, by doing this the support
comes from from some interesting quarters and people; you have to let
the authorities know where you are likely to be every three or four days
but this is not a hard price to pay at all, when its all to do with
safety and assistance. So what I generally do is 'register' with a main
town or settlement every few days, they're called Jawazat, sort of like
a 'tourist' office kinda thing - you take you visa and permits to be
viewed and your details are duly transferred to red tape documents,
which stay on record for I think, about a month or so.
If you play by the rules its all kosher; this is the least you can do,
and it pays. Okay its a bit inconvenient at times but this is Africa
after all....
Hope this has helped
