[OT] Sticking rubber to metal

Hi,
I'm just wondering what you find to be the best solution for sticking
rubber to metal?
A while back I bought a glue gun for this, but find it worse than
useless, superglue never lasts and I have't found any of the Araldite
solutions to be much better.
Typically I want to be able to stick something like a rubber grommet to
a sheet of steel to act like a bump stop to stop two items rubbing
together.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Julian,
I used to do this when working in engineering. Superglue is
probably the best but take note of the fact that there are two types.
The first is Ethyl based and is more suited to plastics. The second is
Methyl based and is more suited to metals. Abrade the rubber with
Emery to take the shiny coating off, or the rough back of the sheet.
Clean the metal with Emery, or STP alcohol, or both. Apply the glue
without touching the nozzle to the work.

Suggest you try and industrial engineering supplies company (industrial
version of a hardware store). There area a number of Bostik glues that are
designed for specific purposes. I'm sure there will be one to suit your
reqs. I did have a quick look for the Bostik UK website but could only find
the US and Oz versions. The Oz site lists dozens of adhesive products - just
knowing which one to choose.
Like I said - engineering supplies company would be my 1st port of call

Julian,
Another tip. Do the job with dirty, but not greasy, hands. That
way it is easier to get your fingers apart afterwards.

Hi Clive,
Yes that always works well - I can't count the number of times I have
been chewing superglue off my hands a day or two after having used it
;-)

Thanks Clive/Ken.
The one things I find with superglue is that the repair always tends to
be quite brittle - something that doesn't work that well when sticking
flexible rubber.
I'll do some more digging and let you know what I find.

Julian,
If it's just to prevent rubbing, there are self adhesive cell foam
sheets (A4 size) available from crafts stores. Otherwise, I've had
some success with Uhu Power Glue.

Polyurethane mastic works for me. Sticks like a booger and stays flexible.

Hi Julian,
The best and only product to use in an appliaction like that is SIKAFLEX.
Not sure where in the UK you'll find it, but in South Africa it is usually
available from large building supply and hardware stores.
Check out their website at www.sika.com
Just don't get it on your clothes or hands, it is extremely adhesive. They
make a wide range of adhesives, and some products are used to bond truck,
car and bus panels together for life.
Hope this helps.

Oh yes we have the Sikaflex too in the France. It must be polyur=E9thane too.

Hi Allan,
I have just ordered some Sikaflex for another sticking job so will give it a try.
Cheers,
Julian
