Overland Cruisers -there's only one!

Seems strange that no-one has yet endorsed the wonderful Overland Cruisers and Julian Voelcker. I do as much of my truck myself if I can but living in London it's often hard to get the heavy lump safely off the ground on a sloping street with camber so for a few years now I head off to Julian's to get stuff done. It's a bit of a schlepp from north London to Ledbury but a good excuse to get out of 'The Smoke' and always nice to see Julian and family.

As far as knowledge about the truck, helpfulness, generosity and qualities as an LC specialist goes, there's none better. I know there's a new kid on the block in Burgess Hill with a name and website that's disconcertingly similar (and a shorter drive for me) but I'll gladly make the effort to Go West.

Julian definitely gets my vote...

Well said, always been more than helpful when I have needed him

Hi there
In my case Jeremy, Greg is 147.77 miels away from me (one way) in Burgess Hill.
Julian is closer to me than Greg, and me being based in brizzle and all. Ideally I'd like some one to live RIGHT ON MY DOORSTEP, but beggars can't be choosers... so its got to be ME - I live on my doorstep...
But I'm not saying that he is too far from me in Burgess Hill, all the time, just is at the moment.
And anyway, I don't judge people, especially the landcruiser lot; I'm happy to be a member of this crowd, no doubt about that.
Cheers
Renate
Two years and then watch this space for teh relaunch of DesertFoxOverland... another new kid on the block, and one who'se done up my OWN cruiser at long last.

He has been a great help to me in the past. Always seems to do his best.

I think you've misunderstood - from my house to Julian's workshop between Ledbury and Hereford is something like 150 miles each way. It's not a great distance in the grand scheme of African drives...

Burgess Hill is significantly closer, my mum lives nearby in Sussex but my endorsement is for Julian V at Overland Cruisers... and I believe you're heading that way next week.

Jeremy

Edit: I find it strange that Julian's name hasn't appeared here before, as a recommended luminary...

Hi Jeremy
I agree entirely.
I could say "Welcome Back" as I haven't seen your presence on this forum for a while (unless I'm looking in the wrong places)!
I gave myself three choices recently; 1) Sell l'Beast in bits or as a unit; 2) Declare it SORN for EVER; or 3) Work on it myself without paying out huge amounts to the likes of Toyota et al. So I choose the latter and have given myself two years to sort myself and l'Beast out.
It was at the Overlander gathering that I decided to change the odds.
Yes, I know that as a african overland driver mileage is no object, but when best quality light crude is a few millims only when in Libya or Algeria then filling up is not a problem. In the UK 1.17 per litre is a little hard on me, especially since I'm not working at the mo, and have the dubious advantage of 'living on benefits' which, by the way, I hate with a passion, then a trek to Greg's place is way outside my financial abilities.
I've met Greg and he seems a good egg as my biker friends would say, and I've known Julian V for several years; he has offered to help, and for that alone I'm grateful.
Tuesday is when it all starts for me; I want to be in a position to travel to the Sahara to complete my survey projects as an archaeologist, and since there is loads of 'Things To Do' on l'Beast between now and 2012 my work is cut out for me; Julian V has the very dubious task of 'training' me...
So, Julian is going to direct my belated 'apprentice internship' and later, when I AM earning vast amounts of money I'll go and start updating all my mods and a few new ones too.....
Regards
Renate

I have never taken my vehicle to Julian but I'm planning on getting him to do some work for me when I get the chance to get down in the near future. I did promise to get him to replace all my discs and pads but unfortunately I had to rush back after I bought my 80. I rang him to explain and he was a top bloke about it. He even gave me the name of the supplier to get the parts I wanted.

I have spoken to Julian on the phone on a number of occasions and he has been full of help and advice. Top fella and well worth dealing with him. I will be calling him again on monday for some bits he mentioned last time I was on the phone

Julian V

Hi y'all
  Julian Voelcker take note.
I've known Julian for a few years now - early days of ELCO and prior to that 80sCool I believe (but I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong).

Julian fixed l'Beast so it passed its MOT with flying colours.

Julian replaced my front UJ as it was s*****d. I don't think it had EVER been looked at, never mind replaced since l'Beast was new.

Later we also talked at length about prepping vehicles.

Being able to do Pre-MOT work is such a valuable tool and an asset, especially for us overlanders, because there are certain things that I for one NEED to be fixed and primed to running at above optimum before I return to the desert sands of Libya.
Whether I'd remember what he taught me is another story entirely; but my father (bless) was fond of saying "Praktisch mach't sie ein Meister" whilst wagging his finger at me.

Julian gives good advice too, another valuable tool.

We had a few mugs of coffee (nice coffee Julian, with 'proper' milk, non of your semi-skimmed or skimmed stuff - thanks)

And, for me, it was nice talking about vehicle prepping again -- something I don't often talk about these days, so it was good sharing the space with a like-minder.

Julian has certainly got my vote and will be doing other planned work on l'Beast, and also, he's easy to get to (well, I did get lost once though).

Cheers :obscene-drinkingcheers: :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Renate, Autoroute says Bristol to Ledbury is 60 miles while Bristol to Burgess Hill is 147 miles, so you are much closer to Julian than Greg.

Yush, I know, and this is why I went to see Julian.
And, I forgot to add that he fixed mi driver's door too, so I'll be prodding Ian R for a motor for the drivers window, don't know the technical term - regulator? Everytime I think 'regulator' I think of my diver's regs that need servicing too.
Between the two of them they both vie for mi money....
But da Beast is going to Julian's again, for sure.
