Overlanding costs/budget

OK, here is one for you to think about:
Assuming you have a fully kitted TLC with all the required tents,
equipment, spares, etc for an overlanding trip what would your budget
be for driving down through France, Spain and then about 3 weeks in
North West Africa?
I'm currently looking at the practicalities of getting over there next
spring and need to get a rough idea of the costs.

Hi Roman,
OK thanks, that is a starting point.
Roughly what was your fuel bill for your last trip - did you ever
record it? It would be interesting to get an idea of how much is
required for living and how much for fuel/ferries.
I need to get an idea of costs for me on my own or with a passenger who
I would split fuel and ferry costs.

Julian,
I did not keep a record of prices, just quantities. You can guestimate
fuel prices from these figures:
Europe - 1550 miles
Africa - 6250 miles
Tarmac - 5900 miles
Off-road - 1900 miles
Total 2120 litres of diesel used,
Average consumption of 19 l/100 km (14.9 mpg).
I recon you spend 75% on fuel, the rest on border formalities,
restaurant bills, hotels, groceries, national parks, etc.

Hi Roman,
OK, thanks for that.
The consumption seems quite high, OK, I appreciate that you were fully
loaded and that it would be higher off road, but have you measured your
consumption whilst doing the long haul across Europe?
I would have thought it would be down to 12-14mpg off road and then 18
-20mpg across Europe.

Julian,
Could be. I could only record fuel put in the tank and distances
between refuelling because the secondary tank gauge broke down. Europe
or not, it was ca 5900 miles on tarmac - I actually recorded only part
the miles done in Europe. If you wish to analyse it in more details,
here are the figures.

Hi Renate, good to see you still around.
At the moment I'm just trying to get a rough idea of the costs, but
want to get them broken down a bit because a friend of mine might be
interested in coming along as well and would be paying half the
fuel/ferry costs, although I have my doubts that his wife will let him
out ;-)
I would be looking to be as self sufficient as possible but would be
aiming to stay in a hotel or something at least once a week for a
decent shower, etc.
The aim would be to go next spring, either in a paid for trip like
Chris S organises or to team up with others from the list here.
In my own mind I had imagined something like ?1500 for one person and
then ?2000 for two people sharing (?1000 each).

Thanks Roman.
So I take it you were away for about 5 weeks.
Considering the mileage covered, did you feel rushed or was it pretty
relaxed?
I'm thinking along the lines of 3 days down to South Spain, three weeks
in N.Africa and then 3-4 days on the way back.
I haven't decided where I want to go, but would like to be able to
experience the main varieties of terrain (desert, mountian, etc) and
see some sites with a view to going back another time with the family
and do a bit more site seeing.

Daily stages were rather quick, if one preferred to arrive at a camp

You could do it like this, or take a feery to Bilbao. or drive to
Marseille (ca 100o km from Calais) and take a ferry to Tangier (ca
30hrs)
Your choice is probably limited to Morocco or Morocco/Mauritiania.
Libya would be too costly to hire a guide just for one car. Tunisia -
not enough places to go in three weeks. Algeria - like Libya less
off-piste driving.

I think =A31,000 each for two sharing (total 2k) is a bit mean myself. If
you're going to go all that way you might as well have the odd treat and
what with fuel, food, drink, hotels on the odd occasion, a grand is not
going to go far. As you go south diesel is cheaper, as is wine and beer, but
unless you plan to indulge in a bit of the army boot-camp assault course
mentality, lighten up, spend a little more and enjoy more. I'm not
suggesting profligacy but am not sure of the wisdom of going to sleep each
night worrying about money and how much you have spent so far and how much
you have left. I spent =A3300.00 on wine alone on the way back through
Spain...at Spanish prices there was lots of it, even from the classy Rioja
bodegas.
My only other bit of advice (not strictly true as I can bore you for hours
about our trip,) is to make sure you have time to park the car, leave it and
explore on foot. If you are in Morocco, there are stunning places in the
Atlas, jebel Sarho etc etc. It takes a bit of discipline but abandoning the
car for a bit makes going back to it even better. It is home after all...!
Pip pip

Distances and time.
3 days belt to south of Spain is a belt... Last year I did Calais to
Carcassone in a day but it was a very very long day and wouldn't recommend
it.
In the past, in a lightly loaded Subaru Legacy B4, a rocket, I did Cadiz to
Burgos in a day, but the car was quick, I left at 5am and got in to Burgos
at about 6pm. Knackered. In a loaded TLC it is slower. On the way back from
Africa last year, we did Marrakech to Tarifa in Spain in a long day, then
the next day did Tarifa to well south of Madrid but it is hard work. If you
share the driving it is a different story but you are missing out on great
parts of Spain. In the time available you probably won't get further than
Morocco but there is still plenty to see and do of all terrains. And if you
fancy a binge you can go and eat like kings in somewhere like Fez, or
wherever.
Happy to talk more if required.

Hi Jeremy,
Yes, I have done Cherbourg to Cahors in a loaded 80 in a day and it didn't
feel that rushed, but we were averaging 90mph most of the way down!
I guess the timing is a little tight for the trip down and up, although may
extend that by staying with friends on the way and way back.

Hi Jeremy,
You are right of course. The speding won't be capped, but just need to get an
idea for the time being. I'm currently working on around the ?1500 mark each
for a comfortable trip or ?2k for me on my own.
I will touch base with you at some point to chat more about it, perhaps when
you dare venture out of the smoke into the wilds of Gloucestershire!
