it's not just the brushes it's the starter contacts also and the contacts
are the more common fault.
I replaced the contacts after my starter died, that worked fine for a few
weeks then it developed a different fault which was due to the bushes.
I got a new starter very cheaply and just replaced it. I'll get round to
changing the brushes on the old one day and sell it on.
Carrying a spare starter and alternator is fine if you have the room and
can cope with the weight , and also if your getting them for a good
price, otherwise you need to service them as Julian suggests. If you do buy
the used ones, dont take them with you and assume they are working properly
, as I said already you need to be sure they work by installing them. If
they do, then leave them in and you'll know you've got working spares and
saved a good bit cash.
cheers

Alright lads + Lassies
Have managed to source a starter motor and alternator out of cruiser
that's being broken up.
As part of my overland prep I was going to replace both starter motor
and alternator with OEM.
Now I'm thinking just take the 2 of these as spare and save a shed load
of cash. All I need to do is learn how to change out these bits of kit.
What do you think?
I suppose I'll still be sacrificing an element of reliability for cash
but not a bad compromise.....
Failure of these bits of kit doesn't seem that common an occurrence.....
Cheers
Niall

Hi Niall,
I wouldn't bother.
On the African continent, electricians are able to re-wind starter engines
and alternators (which nobody bothers to do anymore in Europe) and replace
the coal brushes - I once even saw a guy opening a 1,5 V battery, take the
coal out of it, and use it to replace the brushes in an alternator.
At most, you will need to push your vehicle a few times in order to start it
and to get to a garage, but this is a detail.
I would NOT trust the average mechanic to touch a fuel pump or set the
valves however. But common electrical problems can be repaired locally.
Best,
Cedric

Hi Cedric
it, and use it to replace the brushes in an alternator.
Good bush mechanic!!
She's an Auto so no push starts...
Possible overkill on my part. But as a solo traveller, I'm tending
towards the extra yard.
The funny thing is I haven't a clue what I'm about to launch myself into
- my perspective of what its going to be like is most likely on a
different plane to the reality. I just can't wait to get on the road!!
I've had enough planning and preparation and what if's. Am ready to go
now!!
The cruiser is off the road now until the final prep is complete and
have purchased a 1990 Isuzu trooper to get about. One of my mates has
prophesied that the cruiser will calve just before I'm about to go and
I'll have to go in the trooper.
If I had to, I would take it - now that would be an adventure!! :)
Cheers
Niall

As far as the starter goes I've done that twice now and it's not
difficult on my FZJ80. The second time it took me about 30 mins as I
new what I was doing. There are good guides on
http://forum.ih8mud.com/ and at Slee offroad if I remember though I'm
talking petrol here, dont know about diesel. One thing I would
definately do is; swap the starters now to make sure the spare works
ok, as bench testing the starter isn't full-proof as I found out and
is the reason I've done it twice. Then having done it once this will
make changing back to your original starter on the road relatively
easy for you, in the unlikely event that it should fail on your trip.

Hey Niall
AFAIK the only thing that goes in the starter is the brushes and being the
total pesimist I am today because of my cruiser I would take yours out
replace the brushes and refit.
Then buy the other starter and fit new brushes to that and take with you, so
now yoe have double the chances of not needing the second one at all.
What other spares are you bringing with you just in case.
cheers

Hi Niall,
As others have said it may be overkill taking them as spares.
If you aren't fitting new items (80amp alternator from Toyota about
?155+VAT and Starter at ?260 + VAT) the alternator should be stripped,
cleaned and tested and fit new brushes and the starter should be
stripped, cleaned and have new solenoid contacts and brushes.

Thanks for the feedback.
Bouncing ideas is a good sanity check.
For the reliability factor I'll be running with replacing existing OEM
with new OEM....
Cheers

John
Not sure yet.
I'm focusing on prep to avoid requirement for spares :)
OEM filters, OEM break pads. Spurious UJ's. A bit of oil and a bit of
grease. A shock or 2
A lot of parts will have been replaced, overhauled or inspected.
Thanks
Niall
