| hi every one my name is mark im from frome in somerset i have
| a land cruiser 80 series i go out once a month to salibury
| plain .would any one now how much it would cost to go from
| auto to manual and where to go.
Are you asking how much it would cost to swap in a manual transmission?
If so I haven't a clue, but I'd have thought you would be better off
trading in your existing truck for one with a manual box, as they tend
to be cheaper because the average user prefers the auto. It would save
you a whole load of grief, and certainly a lot of money!
Also are you *sure* you want a manual? I have one as I'm an awkward
cuss who prefers to decide for myself when to change gears, but it is a
very user-unfriendly box: clunky at the best of times, and very baulky
changing down into 2nd when cold. Also the clutches on these vehicles
have a tendency to judder. If I drove a lot in stop-start town traffic
I think I would consider an auto. On the plus side you should get 2 to
3 mpg better fuel economy with the manual.
I don't know how old your truck is, but if you do consider a swap it may
help to know that in (roughly) the period 1995 to 1997 Toyota introduced
the 24 valve motor, and in the UK the only way they could get it through
emissions testing was with a manual box. So there are quite a few N, P
and R reg vehicles floating around with the 24v motor + manual box
option that should be nicely run in.
The 24 valve motor gives marginally more power, but significantly
better fuel economy. Also there was an issue with the No 1 big end
bearing on the older 12v motors that has - supposedly - been fixed on
the later motor. Certainly mine at 120k miles runs like new.
Finally, living in Zomerset, you are fortunate to be within striking
range of the Exeter Gearbox Centre on the Marsh Barton trading estate,
Exeter. They are good mechanics, good value, and could be worth a call
anyway just to discuss the issue. Their phone number is 01392 434049 /
