Petrol V Diesel

Hi Guys
Went down to fill up today and the Diesel has gone up again.
Can someone explain why the Diesel is now dearer than the petrol.
Is it all to do with supply and demand, world forces and greed.
I was always under the impression ( maybe wrongly) that Diesel was cheaper to refine than Petrol because it does not require the same amount of processing as Petrol at the refinery.
Am I wrong or should I say could I ever be right.
cheers

Type "why is diesel more expensive than petrol" into Google to get lots of answers. They seem to boil down to two camps: #1 is an evil conspiracy by politicians (insert name/party of choice here) to extract more money from us; and #2 an imbalance between usage and refinery output.
The latter strikes me as being more credible as - apparently - a typical unit of crude oil refines into 50% petrol, but only 15% diesel. I've read elsewhere that when many of these refineries were built, quite a while ago now, that reflected more or less the relative consumptions of the two fuels, so that is what their processes were optimised for. So now, as diesel consumption has risen proportionately in Europe, refinery capacity is lagging behind demand - hence the higher price. Apparently the modern Ultra Low Sulphur diesels are also more expensive to refine, which doesn't help.

ps: I filled the heating oil tank for this house last week: 1900 litres at 58.6p/litre =3D around =A31170. Ouch!

I was under that impression too - whilst on the continent of Europe diesel
is always cheaper than petrol apart from a couple of countries in back of
beyond eastern Europe/Russian states.
I've also asked myself "why is this?" and I've concluded its conspiracy on
our governments' part and the oil producing giants like BP, Shell, Texaco et
al. We do have our own (UK) supplies of fuel but this isn't cheaper either
- the platforms in the North Sea could produce most of our own supplies for
the British Isles but it seems the major players are keeping the prices
hyped up purposely, so our lot have to do the same so they don't lose out on
the profits....seems a very vicious way of doing things.
In Libya they produce their own sweet light crude that l'beast adores and
its only about 13p per litre...
Either way for economy's (l'beast) sake I'll also prefer to drive diesels
then petrol 'gas guzzlers' Just my 2 euro cents worth

The biggest mistake in fuel prices was switching to pricing in litres
in the UK.
Before that, they could only get away with putting it up a couple of
pence per gallon. Now, it's a couple of pence per litre, so they can
increase it in big steps. As always with supply and demand, we've no
choice.
These days people in the UK are too worried about mortgages / kids /
credit cards to protest, much as I would like to see one.
Of course the big problem is, we've no plan B. If you don't fuel up
your car, then what......? As for the diesel prices, it's "Because
they can". They've recognised there are some superb diesels around in
large numbers, people like the 50 mpg they see in the dashboard
readout, so put up with being bent over at the pumps.
Rant over, back to lurk mode.... :=)
