"it seems you may have used Por 15. How clean does the subframe have
to be? Was it easy to put on? How much did you need?"
The chassis doesn't have to be that clean but any mud, flaky or lose bits
etc should be removed but don't worry about trying to get surface rust off
because the POR15 will deal with it. It can be a bit laborious to apply
particularly when you are under the vehicle because the product is very
runny (but it spreads really well) so you need to ensure that your skin is
not exposed. Apparently 1 US quart will cover 9 square metres but I use the
Chassis Painting Kit (smaller quantities and less chance of it going hard)
Always put cling film between tin and lid otherwise you will never get it
open again and use it sparingly. Follow the instructions and it's great. And
you will need the solvent as well.
Over this winter, my old Bj40 will have the remaining underseal removed and
the underbody painted in POR15, because every year I've been repairing the
underseal and the POR15 test area applied earlier this year is like new
whereas the undersealed areas are looking very sad.
Reference the noise from turbo engines: 25 years ago we used to build stack
s/steel exhaust systems for trucks (Scania etc) and on turbo engines the
silencers were empty and all you get is a slight `crack' at the top end of
the rev range and there is no unnecessary restriction to the gas flow.

Rodger, BJ40 with HJ60 running gear.
