I have a 1996 Prado with the 1kz-te engine.

Bought a adapter cabel on Amazon and one of those cheap testers with screen.

It fires up when turning ignition on and when choosing diagnosis it tries to connect to the Ecu but stops aprox halfway and nothing happends.

Tried another cheap tester. That type that connects to the phone but same result.

Know the socket works as the local Toyota dealer recently has used it and got connected.

My Abs light flashes from time to time and would like to know what side/wheel it is.

What type of obd error readers would people recommend that can connect for sure with that car?

Depends on when your country mandated OBD2 - if it wasn't mandated Toyota doesn't include it for a market.

Pre OBD2 cars use a custom protocol only supported by high end testers. You can access some codes by shorting pins and counting flashes though.

Pins 4 and 13 I think. If you google Toyota diesel flash codes you should find a list.

This might help. ECU codes.
