Hi Guys
I was just wondering, regarding the headlights, is it the angle of the lens
that dictates whether its head or dipped beam.
The reason I ask is there seems to be so many cars around that have
misaligned lights that seem like high beam but are not.
Its only when you flash them and they flash back then you find out.
I know, a lot of flashing going on but what can one do.
If one was to get spots from the US would they conform to our electrics.
A few trucks park near enough to our house to hear and see them fire up
first thing in the morning.
So if it is bad to let the cruiser idle when cold for a few minutes, do
these trucks suffer from the ill effects of this idling day after day like
the cruiser could.

Hi John,
No, it is generally the position of the high beam filament in relation to the
lense design, which obviously varies from vehicle to vehicle.
With low beam the light is generally spread lower and more to the left (in
this country, with very little spread across to the right of the vehicle.
With high beam it is higher/goes further with more spread out to the right of
the vehicle.
Also low beam filaments tend to be a lower wattage to the high beam ones.
Many modern cars have very bright headlights that appear to be badly adjusted
although more often than not they are just brighter.
I believe the manual states that you shouldn't leave the engine idling when
cold and have never thought through the exact reasons for this.
Personally on frosty mornings I start the engine and let it tick over for
almost a minute and then use the hand throttle to bring the revs up to around
1500-2000rpm which is pretty well the same as if I left home, got onto the
dual carriageway and drove down it.
It is during this period that I notice the difference in the noise from the
fan with it starting off working fully for around the minute and then backing
off and shifting less air/being quieter.

Hi John,
No worries.
THe think I forgot to add about the lense and reflector design and low
beam pointing to the left - this is why you have to put the mask on the
lights when driving in Europe to prevent the shine to the left going into
the eyes of oncoming traffic.
She is doing well. Sleeping well, onto solids, teething quietly and
growing fast! One very smiley baby.
