Quick question about OBD

Hi, Ray here. Been tinkering around and enjoying the travel with the 80 recently to find this diagnosis port in the engine bay. Been reading a lot to find out what it is and still having own questions to answer about it. Most importantly out of all those in my head, is this then an OBD1 compliant or the OBD2? This is also because the check engine light went on during our last push to Spain last night and now I'm home I thought I give it a look to find out my OBD2 has no place in the car. Does that mean I need to have an OBD1 adapter? Thanks in advance and for anyone who can help! Cheers!

Looks same as my 90 series Ray. Its not OBDxx anything, you link two pins (shows you inside the diagnostics plug cover/lid) and then count the 'Check Engine' lamp flashes on the dash layout. Below are the codes for a 1KZ-TE but they may not be the same for your 80 series.

1KZ-TE diagnostic codes:

12 = No RPM signal during cranking.
13 = No RPM signal after cranking and engine reaches 680rpm+
14 = Timing control signal (crankshaft angle 7 deg or more out from target)
15 = Throttle control motor (no signal)
16 = Auto trans control signal
18 = Spill control valve (no signal)
19 = Accel pedal position sensor (no signal)
22 = Coolant temp sensor
24 = Intake air temp sensor.
32 = Correction resistor signal.
33 = Intake constrictor control signal.
35 = Boost pressure sensor.
39 = Fuel temp sensor.
41 = Throttle position sensor.
42 = Vehicle speed sensor.
43 = Starter signal to ECU.
51 = Switch control system
96 = EGR valve lift sensor.
99 = Engine immobilizer.

That's some great stuff Mick, really appreciated! So is this where the well-known paper clip trick can be used? Because I see quite a lot of people mentioning it in relation to this. And the fact that it's none of the OBD compliant socket, are there any diagnostic tool or scanner that is compatible with this socket?

Really appreciated all the information everyone! Gonna dig up more information about it since I really want to just have a way I can diagnose things when it happens. Plus I still have a long way from being a proper mechanic so it's quite a big challenge to not be able to do the "plug and play" with OBD scanner I will see also what this Techstream that a lot of people talk about when it comes to diagnosing. Have a great day everyone, cheers!

Pete , in reality that's about all it does have is a diagnostic port....you can only get ABS blink codes ... useful but a world away from even OBD 2

The 80 series 1fz-fe is OBD1 until 1996 I believe (95 is an oddity), and you can have WAY more information IF you can find a TOYOCOM or TOYOFAN which the manufacturer zf-scantools literally just stopped making (I'm not affiliated in any way)... look for those terms online and there is a Facebook group that talks about TOYOBD1 app and another group for buying/selling... TOYOBD1 Users, and the selling group name I cant recall and I dont Facebook but if I find it I can send... oh and it works only on Android and is on Google Play... but you can usually easily find a used Android phone or tablet for cheap and it connects via bluetooth...

Youtube has a bunch of stuff about this and IH8Mud has lots as well.

They were going for about $100 USD and super fast, you have to be right on top of it when one comes up, but since hes no longer making them (as of about a month or two ago) they are probably even harder to get and rising in value faster than gasoline right now...

I hope this helps...

p.s. this tool also works on many other Toyota OBD1 vehicles and there is a list of supported engines on the website for zf-scantools under the app tab

You just made my day and I thank you for that, a lot! It has been fine with 80 since my last reply and I've noticed that the check engine light immediately goes off when the engine is on and it never goes on during the drive, like none. I've decided to keep finding information and at the same time did the oils, oil filters to make sure nothing from the serviceable part is causing it to go on. So can it be something big that I don't know of or is it just an electrical error? And once again, AMAZING info and will definitely take a look of the FB group. Cheers!

Hello OldSpecialist,

Glad I could help- until you are able to procure one, you can absolutely get rudimentary information by bridging E1 and TE1 pins in the OBD1 port in your picture (key off) and then setting the ignition to "on" (dont start it). It will give you a code by blinking the check engine light... youll get one number (a set of flashes) and a little bit longer pause, then a 2nd number... then a definitively longer pause and a second code if there is one. This will repeat until it tells you all the codes, then will repeat the whole process as long as you have the two ports bridged (and the ignition switch on). Turn the vehicle off, then remove the jumper and it will exit diagnostic mode.

The TOYOCOM will list out the codes and their meanings if you choose for it to. It is configurable, and you can log and export data, show real-time information (some has a slight delay), graph the data etc... It will not however clear the codes, you have remove the EFI fuse under the hood in the secondary fuse panel.

Good luck in your hunt for a TOYOCOM, and in your ownership of your Land Cruiser!
