Radiator & Auto Box Cooling

Hi
I have just what seemed a strange one going down the road I came to a stop
when setting off again there was a bit of a clunk which appeared to come
from the auto box as if there was a lot of backlash. Anyway on my travels i
pulled up at the takeaway and noticed a noise like air escaping, so had a
quick look round and noticed a trial of what looked like chocolate coloured
milkshake.
Well not lot I could do at the moment so went home right sharp about half
mile.
When I was 100yds away steam from under the bonnet.
Pulled up and lifted the bonnet there was steam and the milkshake coming
from the expansion tank.
Any way it appears that the radiator has the auto fluid going through it at
the bottom end and the internals have bust.
I have remove the radiator, full of oily stuff, and so is the engine.
What worries me more is he auto box, when I dropped the oil it wasn't a nice
colour of red or dark red it was more milkshakey.
Has anybody had a similar experience?

Hi John,
I have heard of cross contamination issues, but can't remember the
details.
Some oil in the coolant should be relatively easy to flush out, trying
to get the water out of the auto box will be harder.
Unless you have the kit to do a proper flush you ideally need to drain
all the oil from the auto box when you change the rad/cooler and then
fill it up with the same quantity that you removed as well as however
much you think may have been lost. Double check on the dip stick
before taking for too much of a drive.
I would be inclined do a short run cycling all the gears and then go
and change out the oil again - it is a bit of a waste, but should flush
out most of the water.
As an extra precaution, drain out some oil again aftger a couple of
hundred miles - if it is still mucky, change again.

You could change the ATF using the pumping round system, might use
three times as much fluid but it will clean it.
