Radiator roller blind

Folks
I reckon my truck (24 valve diesel) is over-cooled in winter - certainly I get better mpg in summer.
So I've pulled the "roller blind" about half-way down across the radiator to see what happens. But does anyone have any experience of restricting the cooling like this, and any knowledge of any problems? All suggestions welcome.

Hi Christopher,
This appears to be a common issue with the 12valve and 24valve TLC
engines.
I know of some that have actually pulled their fans off, but personally
I wouldn't do that because the fan cools the whole engine bay, not just
the engine.
I know Gareth runs with his blind down all of the time, even in summer,
and I pulled my one down all the way about a month aga, but to be
honest haven't noticed that much of a difference.
No doubt Gareth will chip in on this when he gets into the office on
Tuesday.

Chris, you may recall that my military spec has none of the fancy
extras like blinds, but it still lives and breathes like any other
80. So in winter I do it the old fashioned way and place a piece of
stiff rubber matting in front of the rad assembly blanking the
bottom half. This not just for local trips but also my once or twice
weekly 185+ km round trip to a satellite office. This trip involves
one steep mountain pass rising to 1900metres, but it keeps nicely
warm and the needle does not leap up the scale. (Even in winter when
I am invariably in 4WD for the greater part of the trip). The
blanking just helps the old girl warm-up that much quicker. I don't
see that you would have any problem using the blind at all.
(And a PS. No report from Andy on his strange rattle yet; but Chris
was it you who once posted info about a Toy gearbox specialist in Devon?)

Thanks for the reassurance about radiator blinds. I'd prefer to blank the bottom half, but we'll see what happens - I've done 120 miles of motorway at 70mph this weekend without the temp gauge twitching and the oil pressure at its usual mark, thus so far so good.
Personally I think an electric fan would be a good move in the faster warm-up / better mpg stakes, although judging by the feel of my radiator hoses (cool) during warm-up the thermostat is working correctly. I've just sold our 3 horse trailer, so when the cheque clears I'll have some money to think about pump tuning / intercooler / electric fan mods.

It was the "Exeter Gearbox Centre" in the Marsh Barton trading estate in Exeter, tel 01392 434049. I was very impressed with them (and I believe Julian had some auto gearbox work done by them too). But I think Andy was a good long way 'oop North from here, won't he?

Chris, I have run with the blind fully down for the past 18 months - all the time. Absolutely no problems even when towing on a hot day. The engine warms up inside 2 - 2.5 miles, the heater works fine and the gauge sits steady at a shade under half way.
I have recently changed the anti - freeze, stayed with Toyota red, I back flushed the system and treated it to Halfords two pack rad flush. This smelt mildly acidic and loosened off various particulates.
If anything the gauge sat a tad lower after all this.
