Radio / CD removal

I'm trying to get at the back of my radio / cassette / CD to fit a band
expander as it's a Jap import.
What do I have to remove?
The manual I have says the stering column needs to come out which seems
a bit excessive. I have the instrument cluster panel loose but am a
little afraid to wiggle too hard. I have checked tow manuals and they
don't have enough detail to be sure.
Thanks,
Ian.

On mine (1996, VX) to get the centre dash apart you remove the ash-tray, undo the two screws that exposes, and the front facia section (around the switches & AC controls etc) just pulls gently out. 2 minute job.

Mine's a 91 Jap (HDJ81). Not sure if it's the same - I have the centre
dash all loose and undone but not sure if it just needs a good tug,
seems to be catching near the steering column plastic but it's sort of
indeterminate if it just need a bit of brute force as I can't see well
enough to decide.
Thanks,
Ian.

Hmm, yes - had a look in the manual & I see what you mean.
Seems a bit of an overkill just to get the radio out. Can you not get at the radio mounting bolts with the dash loose?
Sorry, can't help any further.

On my 94 the steering column does not have to come off! There are a few
screws not so obvious to see, and you shouldn't have to pull it too hard
but it does sort of clip into the section below the ignition barrel.
It's no use me looking at mine now because I cut most of it away and the
93 is out and about at the moment. If it's not a rush job I can have a
look in the 93 later ...
I think the AC control wires are quite short so if I remember rightly
you can pull the facia a little way forwards and then have to get your
hands behind to disconnect everything.

Thanks Jon but I have managed to bodge it!
The problem was that all the cabling was a bit on the short side
especially some non-standard stuff to some spot lights and the add on
rear fog light it required as an import. Once I had managed to
disconnect the offending switches I then found the aerial cable I was
looking for.
I have to say I was astounded how tight everything is behind the dash
surely it would make everyone's life easier to leave a bit of slack on
cables. Getting my lumpy hands behind was no easy feat.
