Re - ferry: in my experience one of the most telling factors is where you get loaded on the ferry and hence the effect on where in the scheme of things you get unloaded at the other end. First on is not necessarily first off. I have used the priority booking / loading / offloading scheme with Brittany ferries on a few occasions - well worth the extra. On past occasions I have been stuck on a ferry for over an hour whilst everybody else disembarked.
Very frustrating when you have a long drive ahead of you.
