Re Big End Bearings

Hi Renate-it is me who's gonna add something about BEB
I spoke today with all-Americans in Nederland and the guy told me
that even 24 valves engines are not protected against that problem.
So I'm planning to change them anyway ............

Not all of them but better change BEB than the engine...

Higuy's,
it is not so much the quality of the oil but the level of ZDDP
(antiwear bearing passifier additive) and calcium level (detergent and
bearing corrosion preventative, min 3000ppm) that are important.
Cheers,
Craig.

Which oil have a high calcium content, and where can they be purchased? I
read that Castrol Delo CXJ is (?) is best for Jap diesel engines, but can't
find it anywhere in the UK.
Cheers,
Fred.

Hi Craig
Can you just drop some calm words about BEB and 24 valves HDJ80
engines??????
Can't you just say that this 'never' happened???
hope you'll do....
cheers

By the way I'm going to change the oil on tuesday at Toyota and they
use 'Mobile 1' something like 0W40
but not quite sure-I'l ask them on Monday...

Does anyone know the oil requirements, in terms of calcium, detergent etc
for petrol engined LC's? Is it the same as the diesel? All this talk of BEB
and Main Bearing failure has me worried now.
Any advice gratefully received.
Pete

Hi Pete,
I have not gone into the specifics but as it is a spark ignition engine
the oil does not have to cope with carbon deposits in the same way and
there are not distinct families of petrol engines. In general you are
btter of with a european oil as they are generally more heavily
fortified with additives and a better basestock due to the fact
europeans typically run longer drain intervals than american's. You can
run synthetics if you want, You won't see a brg failure like in a diesel
eventually you may wear brg's out when your truck has 500-1,000,000km on
it or something otherwise it is bearing changes with engine rebuilds.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Peter,
As far as I am aware there are no issues relating to BEBs and the
petrol engines. I have been following LC lists for about six years now
and haven't seen any reported problems so you should be alright.
If you are concerned, search the 80s list archives on
http://www.birfield.com and also search the 80 series forums at
http://www.ih8mud.com, but I suspect that you won't find anything.

Hi Frederick,
Have you tried ringing Caltex UK and asking about CXJ?
Ones that I specifically know have the right style of additive package.
There are not many to choose from, there are plenty purported to be OK
though.
Amsoils 5w30 heavy duty diesel oil, 15W40 marine oil, 15W40 semi syn
diesel oil.
Caltex CXJ,
Castrol J-Max but I have heard some unkind comments about it's durability.
Any OEM oils, Isuzu's being best, but unless they have upped there game
illegal to sell in europe due to excessive volatility.
Morris might be worth asking if they have anything,
Total probably have something close enough.
Often if you ask an oil company directly what the calcium level is they
will reply sorry we can't tell you that information is commercially
sensitive.
In that case you will have to pick something that looks like there is a
good chance it sounds OK run it for 10,000km and then do an oil analysis
and if it is still greater than 3000ppm calcium you are pretty safe. My
last oil analysis at 10,000km on the oil was so clean, 0.2% soot (2-3%
is OK) and levels that relate to the abuse the base stock is recieving
from combustion byproducts were very low, I am running it till 20,000km
and then I will check it again.
Running a low calcium oil and changing very often will not work as well
as running the correct type for a much longer drain interval.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Craig
how do you 'analyze' the oil? Here in Norway the fullsyntetic oil
Mobile 1 is the most expensive oil on the market-cost over 10 euros
per litter and that's what Toyota is using at the workshop.
Unfortunately the importer of Amsoil went bankrupt here....
cheers
